Connor's actions
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 2 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 30 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Transportation
Use Public Transit
Public Transit
I will use public transit 1 mile(s) per day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Land Sinks
Support a Community Garden
Multiple Solutions
I will support a community garden by volunteering, donating, or advocating for a new or existing one.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 240 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Connor Cardinal 4/30/2021 10:46 AMWell, by exploring the land around me, I get a better sense of where everything is. I learn where things are in my region, and how different places interact with each other. For instance, I went and explored my local watershed. I could see where the snow melts up in the mountains, and see where the water comes down the mountains and into the deep valleys. I received a better understanding of where the water I drink comes from in this area. -
Connor Cardinal 4/30/2021 10:44 AMWent for a walk with my adventure pal. Did it barefoot. Also, I had two veggie meals, but when I saw the cafeteria serving a chef special, which was quail, I could not help but try some... Tastes like chicken. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Use Public TransitHow has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Connor Cardinal 4/28/2021 10:45 AMI love being able to take the bus. I started taking the bus 4 or 5 years ago and it made me appreciate the convenience and experience of bus-riding as compared to just driving everywhere. I also like being able to walk and bike places as an alternative to driving. It's good for my body and refreshing for my mind. -
Connor Cardinal 4/28/2021 10:43 AMGoing alright. I walked around a little bit and enjoyed some veggie meals. -
Connor Cardinal 4/26/2021 7:36 PMIt's going good today! I walked around on my school's campus, and I had a plant-based protein smoothie. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Support a Community GardenWhat are the multiple benefits of community gardens, including carbon sequestration? Why do these benefits matter to you?
Connor Cardinal 4/26/2021 7:35 PMCommunity gardens bring people together in a place that fosters connections to nature, food, and other people. Community gardens also act as carbon sinks through the process of plants taking atmospheric carbon and absorbing it and passing it into the soil when they die through enrichment. Primarily, the first benefit of providing a connection to nature and food is important to me, because there are few places in today's society where people can build their own relationship with the food system and the natural world. -
Connor Cardinal 4/25/2021 5:12 PMI missed a couple days of the challenge due to being out of town... But I went backpacking with a friend and we camped in some of the local wilderness which was so refreshing. I love our Southern Oregon nature! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Connor Cardinal 4/25/2021 5:11 PMI really enjoy learning about local plant life by learning the names of different herbs and flowers in my area. Just recently, I learned the names of about 4 edible species and a handful of others that have beautiful flowers. I went walking on Lower Table Rock today, and there is nothing I would change about that infrastructure... The trail is well-groomed and that's all that is needed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Connor Cardinal 4/22/2021 9:46 PMBecause we have learned to worship the meat-centric diet. Where there is the buying power and a lack of traditional diet, meat has become a staple food instead of a luxury. Constantly eating meat puts a huge burden on the planet because to sustain that diet, tons of grain must be put into feeding the animals that we eat, instead of just say, eating that grain in the form of cereal. Also, instead of being able to utilize the soil to grow a diverse range of crops, we use monoculture practices to efficiently feed our livestock, another downside to the carnivorous diet. -
Connor Cardinal 4/22/2021 9:37 PMToday was Earth day!!! Today I took the bus to Medford and went skateboarding. I also sat in the park and read my book, which was really nice.
