Action Track: Climate Resilience
Participate in making your community a better place for Earth Day!
By April 30, take one action to participate in making your community a better place. Be creative about your action! From picking up litter along a river to planting a garden to attending / volunteering for an Earth Day event - do something out in your community by April 30, take a picture of what you did, and post it as a blogpost on Ecochallenge.org.
Buildings
Plan to Insulate
Insulation
I will find out how to make my home more energy efficient through better insulation and weatherization.
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Support Businesses Owned by Women, BIPOC, or Immigrants
Sustainable Intensification for Smallholders
I will spend 100 minutes researching businesses owned by women, immigrants, and Black, Indigenous, and people of color that I can support when shopping.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 2 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Industry
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 200 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Land Sinks
Plant Trees
Temperate Forest Restoration
I will plant 2 tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop
Public Transit
I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or implementing some other small improvement.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Support Indigenous Peoples' Land Management
Indigenous Peoples' Forest Tenure
I will donate to Native American Rights Fund, which protects tribal natural resources and environmental rights and promotes Native American Human Rights.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Mia Rose Bratcher 4/30/2021 12:05 AMPeople in richer countries tend to eat more of it because it is seen as a luxury/normal good and they can afford it. Eating more meat affects our bodies in numerous ways, but one example is that it promotes development in chronic disease in yourself and others. Meat also harms our planet through the land clearing and burping cattle which both contribute to global warming. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Plant TreesHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Mia Rose Bratcher 4/09/2021 4:44 PMPlanting trees means one is around nature and being in nature has many positive effects on the human body. Being around nature is proven to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve mood. Spiritually, the ground has energy and doing things like standing outside barefoot or even walking around, "recharges" you. This has to do with Earth's energy being absorbed through our feet, and some believe that it takes out "bad" energy and replenish it with new. Overall planting trees and being around nature is good for the human body, mind, and soul. -
Mia Rose Bratcher 4/07/2021 10:17 PMSo far the challenge is going pretty good. I've been eating meatless meals 6 out of 7 day every week :) Going to try going 7/7 and then possibly vegan for the last week of April -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Support Indigenous Peoples' Land ManagementIndigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?
Mia Rose Bratcher 4/06/2021 8:58 PMBalance is important to sustainability because everything in the world is interconnected. There are opportunity costs in anything that happens. One cannot benefit by something without affecting someone or something, so it's important to live within our limits. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Practice the 5 R'sWhat are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
Mia Rose Bratcher 4/02/2021 10:23 AMI can refuse using one time use plastics. Reduce my use of automobile transportation. I will reuse my left overs before they spoil to eliminate food waste. I will repurpose items that don't decompose or deteriorate as fast. I will continue to recycle. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Plan to InsulateWhat are some of the benefits of making your home more energy efficient?
Mia Rose Bratcher 4/02/2021 8:18 AMSome of the benefits to making my home more energy efficient is that it is, for the long term, better for the environment if my household were to insulate and it would save us money. Household heating/cooling systems are one of the major energy consumption points in the average household, so by insulating a home, there is less energy consumed meaning less greenhouse gasses released into the atmosphere. It also saves money because even though the up front costs are very expensive, so is the monthly heating bill for my home. Insulation will lower the amount that the heating/cooling system is used, meaning there will be money saved. Another benefit to insulation is that this form reconstruction makes living more comfortable for individuals living in the household. This happens because the temperature of the house will stay the prefered temperature for longer, again, saving money and allowing for enhanced comfortability. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Accelerating Solutions Support Businesses Owned by Women, BIPOC, or ImmigrantsGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. What have you done in the past to support women-owned businesses? How can you better support communities by supporting women?
Mia Rose Bratcher 4/02/2021 7:56 AMIn the past I have been supporting women owned businesses by doing a quick search on my phone if I want to go out to eat or shop. I try to support women owned businesses because I understand how hard it can be since I own one and so does my mom. There are more doubts, hardships, and women owned businesses are more likely to shut down when financial issues arise at home. When ever I choose to support one I always tip generously and I post on my social medias so others can hopefully go there too. I can better support women businesses by educating myself more about my favorite places and keep spreading the word. I also should expand where I go so I can support more women owned businesses.
