Leah's actions

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use

Reducing Waste

I will repurpose at least (___) item/s per day instead of throwing it in the trash. It's very challenging and cost prohibitive to lead a fully zero-waste, as I increase my zero waste habits there are still items I get that need to be thrown away. Such as pill bottles, plastic food containers (sour cream, yogurt, etc), plastic drink containers, etc... I will find an alternative use for these items instead of throwing them away, such as turning a pill bottle into: an emergency sewing kit, seed storage, survival kit. This will lessen my waste as I try to get less and less of it in the first place.

I wasn't able to accomplishing any of my challenges yesterday because remodeling my basement bathroom had kept me too busy. Hopefully the remodel will make it more energy efficient. I will at least install a low flow shower head to reduce water usage.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

I love to make things and craft. My dream for a long time has been to have a fiber farm where I raise animals for their fiber production. I'd then harvest the materials, process them and make them into clothing. Unfortunately, I'm not at that point yet. What I can do in the mean time is get yarn, fabric and roving (to spin yarn with) at Scrap that people have donated and create new accessories and fashion from this!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

There are so many things impacting the health of water systems! More than I'm even aware of. Some things negatively impacting water systems: chemical fertilizer and pesticides, plastics and other trash, runoff, erosion, industrial discharge, etc... I will not use chemical fertilizers or pesticides and I already have one rain barrel but will increase to two. I have already been planting some native shrubs and plants. I will research more things I can do to improve the health of water systems.

    Land Sinks Plant Trees
How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

It felt good to work hard digging the holes, amending the soil and getting the trees put into their new home. Afterwards, I looked at my finished planting and felt great pride. They were mainly native plants so I can't wait until they grow larger and are a source of food and habitat for animals and insects!

Buildings Learn about the Legacy of Redlining
How does city planning and design relate to equity and climate change?

I knew the basic ideas about redlining, but these articles bring up other points I haven't really thought about before. Like the temperature being hotter in redlined areas versus green. It's something I've experienced but never really thought about in depth before. And how environmental racism exacerbates the Covid 19 effects on BIPOC communities. There are suggestions for how we can undo this redlining but I need to find out even more. I'll need to research politicians and groups that support these actions.
