Marianne Barrier 4/30/2021 11:51 AMOne thing I've added to my routine the past year is Terracycle boxes. They are a waste management company working to help recycle items that aren't typically included in standard recycling. They partner with various companies to offer free recycling of certain types of product packaging, typically just for those branded products, but sometimes accepting a wider type.
For any plastics that can't be freely recycled, I purchase a box in which I place all of my non-recyclable plastics (after cleaning it, if it was food packaging). It took me about a year to fill up the box I have. It comes with a pre-paid shipping label to have it sent to their nearest facility where they recycle/reuse all that they can.
Part of the reason I do this is to keep the plastic out of the landfill and part is to let me see how much plastic waste I am collecting through my regular activities. It makes me pay closer attention to everything I purchase to minimize the wasteful plastic I will receive. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Research PeatlandsMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Marianne Barrier 4/30/2021 11:31 AMIn reading about peatlands, I learned that much of what was peatlands in coastal North Carolina were drained in the past. I would like to find out more how they can be restored and if there is some way I can help. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Local Perennial BiomassClimate scientist Katharine Hayhoe states that "The reason we care about climate change is because it affects the people and places that we care about." What is happening (or will happen) in your area that will affect the people and places you care about?
Marianne Barrier 4/30/2021 11:27 AMI'm concerned about how the changing climate will affect the beautiful scenery we have in North Carolina with lush forests and waters. As temperatures rise, some species may die off as they are unable to adapt to the change. We may also see changes to the wildlife in our area as some may migrate to higher elevations or other regions where they are more fit to succeed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn about Temperate ForestsAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
Marianne Barrier 4/30/2021 11:19 AMAs hard as it is to hear about the challenges, I am hopeful because people are trying to make things better. Groups in our area working to protect our existing temperate forests and parks, such as Umstead State Park. I am lucky to live close to Umstead where I can spend time in the forest and see how nature is surviving and thriving. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Support Companies Leading in Green EnergyEvery dollar you put into solar or wind is a dollar not put into traditional financial institutions. You'll also be bolstering the fossil fuel divestment movement, too. Name some companies you know that invest in green energy. How can you support them?
Marianne Barrier 4/29/2021 6:39 PMThe NC Clean Energy Technology Center is a great resource to promote clean energy options and to train people for jobs supporting these industries. This is a great resource for individuals and companies in the area invest in green energy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn More about Regenerative AgricultureClean air, clean water and healthy food are just three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. What are some other reasons? How could/does regenerative agriculture positively impact you and your community?
Marianne Barrier 4/29/2021 6:29 PMRegenerative agriculture keeps farmland from becoming nutrient poor from overuse and likely produces better produce, which is then sold in the community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate Resilience Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Marianne Barrier 4/29/2021 6:17 PMI don't remember hearing of silvopasture before. It makes sense to incorporate the trees into the pasture to provide shade and windbreak. It's also nice that it provides better quality feed for the animals. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Accelerating Solutions Support Businesses Owned by Women, BIPOC, or ImmigrantsGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. What have you done in the past to support women-owned businesses? How can you better support communities by supporting women?
Marianne Barrier 4/29/2021 5:49 PMOne way I've been supporting women-owned businesses is to choose them in my loans on Kiva.org. I just searched the https://www.womenownedlogo.com/ link provided here and discovered a women-owned tea shop in Asheville, NC and I just made a purchase. Websites like this help a lot in giving me somewhere to find the businesses I want to support. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Research Cement AlternativesConcrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but its carbon footprint may not be obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?
Marianne Barrier 4/29/2021 10:20 AMI wonder how much of a carbon footprint asphalt has, since it is spread out all over our areas and is constantly needing repair as it breaks down with use and weather. For a few years I have backed the development of what are called "Solar Roadways" in hopes that this is a technology that can eventually replace much of our roadways, parking lots, sidewalks, etc.
These are high-tech glass paving tiles designed to replace standard roadways. They convert solar rays into energy that can be used to warm the tiles to keep roads clear during ice and snow storms as well as to light up LEDs to use as road markings. They are linked together to form an energy grid, so the function is not lost if an individual tile is damaged. The DOT has funded testing to see that they hold up with high traffic, heavy trucks, and repeated wear. The progress of new technologies like this is slow, but I'm hoping this, or something like it, will provide a more sustainable solution to our paved areas. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Marianne Barrier 4/29/2021 10:05 AMI would like to incorporate more fish into my diet, so I downloaded the seafood watch list for the Southeast US to help me choose what to try. I found it interesting how many fish types are found on all 3 lists (green, orange, and red), with the differences being the sources.
After living in Seattle and having access to fresh, wild-caught Pacific Salmon, I end up not buying it often due to lack of availability of what I consider the "good" salmon. I will look more closely at the sourcing of my salmon to ensure it falls in the green or orange list.
