Support Local Food Systems
Plant-Rich Diets
I will source 15 percent of my food from local producers each day. This could include signing up for a local CSA, buying from a farmer's market, visiting a food co-op, foraging with a local group, or growing my own ingredients.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Smart Seafood Choices
Ocean Farming
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Electricity
Calculate My Carbon Footprint
All Drawdown Solutions
I will calculate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce my negative impact on the environment.
Action Track: Climate Resilience
Plant Trees
Temperate Forest Restoration
I will plant 1 tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Health and Education
Host a Film Screening
Health and Education
I will host a virtual film screening and discussion about women's and gender equality issues.
Health and Education

Through social media, I will raise awareness about gender inequity in education by sharing the information found in the links below.
Land Sinks
Combat the Heat Island Effect
I will plant a tree or shrub at home or in my community to combat the heat island effect.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 30 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Land Sinks
Forest-Friendly Foods 2
Tropical Forest Restoration
I will replace or remove from my current diet the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products that are known to contribute to deforestation.
Buildings
Learn about making my home/workplace more energy efficient.
I will commit to learn about and take action to make my home/workplace more energy efficient.
Industry
Reduce Single Use Plastics (SUP) and/or Disposables
I will commit to purchase fewer SUPs and learn and use alternative options.
Industry
Advocate For More Packaging Options
Multiple Industry Solutions
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Industry
Go Paperless
Recycled Paper
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Advocate for Compost where I work or volunteer
I will speak up and ask if it is possible to implement composting methods at my work or place(s) where I volunteer.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Composting
Composting, Reduced Food Waste
I will start a compost bin where I live.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use

Greg Apodaca 4/30/2021 4:46 PMWow! This is a great web site! So educational. Loved the gentle reminders to do. more stuff and. check in frequently. I learned a lot about how to live more sustainably, my not-so-great habits, and also great things I am already doing. I am looking forward to participating in future challenges so I can learn how to use the web site more effectively and score more points. Thanks!-
Deborah Kim (Ecochallenge.org Staff) 4/30/2021 4:55 PMThank you, Greg! Glad you could join us!

Greg Apodaca 4/28/2021 3:01 PMGotta say that engaging in a meditation retreat that recommends meatless meals and rrecipes has shown me how delicious meatless meals can be. It will be easier for our family now to pursue 85% meatless living. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate Resilience Support a Community GardenWhat are the multiple benefits of community gardens, including carbon sequestration? Why do these benefits matter to you?
Greg Apodaca 4/28/2021 2:56 PMOur community garden at home feeds us and also prevents the use of pesticides and fertilizers since we use non in our aeroponic tower garden. It matter to us that our family east healthier when we grow our own food and share our food with friends. -
Greg Apodaca 4/20/2021 9:12 AMI appreciate the email reminders to check in and they have helped me be more aware of the challenge and my actions. I don't check in every day so daily. challenges aren't working for me to keep an accurate accounting of my actions. for example, I hiked Saturday and Sunday but didn't check in til Tuesday and I was unable to go back and list results for exploring nature areas. Weekly goals would work better for me. I've heard a lot of folks say the. same thing, its hard to check in every day, so better options for tracking are needed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric VehicleReducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?
Greg Apodaca 4/05/2021 11:38 AMOur family has given up one car and switched to a hybrid for our remaining car. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use CompostingProducing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?
Greg Apodaca 4/01/2021 5:00 PMFertilizer. I got tired of throwing away and thus wasting food scraps and yard clippings so I hired 301 Organics to compost for me and give students a chance to learn about composting at the same time. -
Greg Apodaca 4/01/2021 4:57 PMThe climate is in a state of emergency. I feel like what I can do, I must do, to help save the Earth as our home. That's why I am leading Community 2.0 to mobilize our community to take actions such as these in the Ecochallenge platform. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Start a Social Media CampaignHow are people responding to the statistics you're sharing on social media?
Greg Apodaca 4/01/2021 4:55 PMResponse is starting and hopefully will grow as the month progresses and we post more often in many places.
