Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
Methane Digesters
I will watch a video about methane digesters (also commonly known as anaerobic digesters).
Electricity
Support Companies Leading in Green Energy
Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaics, Distributed Solar Photovoltaics
I will use my spending power to reward companies leading in creating or purchasing green energy and incentivize others to invest more in green energy.
Action Track: Climate Resilience
Learn More about Biomass
Biomass Power
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of biomass.
Action Track: Climate Resilience
Support Microgeneration in Low Income Countries
Small Hydropower, Micro Wind Turbines, Microgrids
I will make a donation to a nonprofit that installs microgeneration in low income countries.
Health and Education
Support Businesses Owned by Women, BIPOC, or Immigrants
Sustainable Intensification for Smallholders
I will spend 30 minutes researching businesses owned by women, immigrants, and Black, Indigenous, and people of color that I can support when shopping.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Building With Carbon Storing Waste Products
Engineered Sinks
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching how people can build with carbon-storing materials - including agricultural byproducts - and discuss it with my peers in person or by posting to social media.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Smart Seafood Choices
Ocean Farming
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 60 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Land Sinks
Learn about Temperate Forests
Temperate Forest Restoration
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the environmental services provided by and the environmental issues affecting temperate forests.
Land Sinks
Buy Bamboo
Bamboo Production
When they are available, I will purchase products made from bamboo instead of wood, plastic, or metal.
Industry
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Buildings
Solar Arrays
Renewable energy will be a key part of the Green Transition in the coming years and solar arrays are just one option for office buildings, communities, and residences. For example, CUNA Mutual Group has two solar arrays at our Waverly campus that generate about 40% of electricity use each year! Read this article to learn more about how Solar power will help solve the climate crisis by 2030
Buildings
Data Centers
Data centers are a major global consumer of electricity, with some estimating that they account for 3% of electricity produced globally. These data centers continue to grow as more and more data needs to be stored. Sustainability experts are beginning to strategize on how to reduce the environmental impact of these essential data centers by reducing their size and increasing the renewable energy that powers them. Read these articles to learn more!
Buildings
Research Heat Pumps
High-Efficiency Heat Pumps
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching heat pumps to see if installing one makes sense for my home/building.
Electricity
Calculate My Carbon Footprint
All Drawdown Solutions
I will calculate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce my negative impact on the environment.
Action Track: Climate Resilience
Learn about 'Green Gentrification'
Multiple Solutions
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about green gentrification and how it relates to city planning for climate action.
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Solve Climate by 2030 Event
Solve Climate by 2030 is a global movement to solve Climate Change in the next decade through state-level and local-level action. Throughout Earth Month, the movement has organized 100 events around the world to educate and discuss climate problems and solutions. These events are a great way to learn more about local action on Climate Change!
Transportation
Use Muscle Power
Multiple Transportation Solutions
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Support Local Food Systems
Plant-Rich Diets
I will source 20 percent of my food from local producers each day. This could include signing up for a local CSA, buying from a farmer's market, visiting a food co-op, foraging with a local group, or growing my own ingredients.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Industry
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bioplastics
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and BIPOC-majority neighborhoods. I will avoid buying and using 5 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 2 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Jo Annin - CUNA Mutual Group 4/20/2021 6:49 AMI found this to be really interesting! I've always wondered what "use by," "sell by," and "best by" dates mean. From now on, I'll try to make my best judgement of whether food has gone bad based on taste and smell, rather than just the sell by dates on the package. Hopefully this will help reduce my food waste! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Jo Annin - CUNA Mutual Group 4/19/2021 7:10 AMFor my daily walk today I participated in the UW Madison BIPOC Coalition Unity March! Check out their Instagram page: @uwmadisonbipoccoalition to learn more. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Support Businesses Owned by Women, BIPOC, or ImmigrantsGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. What have you done in the past to support women-owned businesses? How can you better support communities by supporting women?
Jo Annin - CUNA Mutual Group 4/19/2021 7:04 AMI visited Bloom Bake Shop in Madison, WI, which is one of my favorite women-owned local businesses! Bloom is also very sustainable - they compost, source their food from local/organic producers, and provide amazing Vegan and Gluten Free options for customers. I researched more local women-owned businesses in Madison and I can't wait to check them out! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Calculate My Carbon FootprintWhat stood out to you most about your carbon footprint? What surprised you or sparked curiosity? Where can you take most immediate action?
Jo Annin - CUNA Mutual Group 4/06/2021 6:35 AMI was interested to see how much of an impact a reduced meat diet had on my carbon footprint. I've been trying to eat less animal products without giving them up entirely, and that has had a really good impact on my carbon footprint. However, having a car greatly increases my impact, event though it's a hybrid and has pretty good gas mileage. Trying to use muscle-powered and public transportation as much as possible seems to be where I can make a big impact! -
Jo Annin - CUNA Mutual Group 4/05/2021 9:23 AMI completed the LEARN ABOUT 'GREEN GENTRIFICATION' action today and found it very interesting to learn more about this problem. Green Gentrification, an aspect of environmental racism, indicates that climate action must be intersectional with equity to ensure that our communities are creating effective solutions. I would like to do further research on how Madison's Climate Action Plan is incorporating equity and racial justice into its framework.
