Melinda's actions
Health and Education
Connect With A Nonprofit
Health and Education
I will connect with a local nonprofit working on issues affecting women, girls, and/or trans and nonbinary people in my community, and find out how I can get involved or become a member.
Industry
Become A Master Recycler/Composter
Recycling
I will sign up for a Master Recycler/Composter program in my area.
Industry
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bioplastics
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and BIPOC-majority neighborhoods. I will avoid buying and using 5 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.
Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop
Public Transit
I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or implementing some other small improvement.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Electricity
Explore Other Electricity Solutions
All Electricity Solutions
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching other Drawdown Electricity Solutions.
Electricity
Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
Methane Digesters
I will watch a video about methane digesters (also commonly known as anaerobic digesters).
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Zero-waste Cooking
Reduced Food Waste
I will cook 1 meal(s) with zero-waste each day
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Keep Track of Wasted Food
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Earth Month Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.
Industry
Purchase Food from a Sustainable Pittsburgh Designated Restaurant
I will purchase food from a Sustainable Pittsburgh Restaurant. Establishments that have earned a Sustainable Pittsburgh Restaurant designation have demonstrated a commitment to take economic, environmental, and social actions that benefit the region. See the link provided for more information and a list of designated restaurants.
Land Sinks
Explore an Allegheny County Parks Trail
Get connected with nature in one of our own Allegheny County Parks. Explore one or more of the many well-marked hiking trails throughout the parks. The link outlines different options for finding and navigating each trail, including a smart phone app.
Transportation
Stay on the Ground
Telepresence, High-Speed Rail
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Support Local Food Systems
Plant-Rich Diets
I will source 25 percent of my food from local producers each day. This could include signing up for a local CSA, buying from a farmer's market, visiting a food co-op, foraging with a local group, or growing my own ingredients.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 60 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Electricity
Learn About Hydro-Electric Power
Learn about the new hydro-electric plant that will provide clean energy to county facilities!
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Melinda Angeles 4/12/2021 8:23 AMThis weekend I was hankering something on the healthier side and luckily I'm surrounded by a huge variety of restaurants. I just happened to order some sweet and savory crepes from T-Swirl in Squirrel Hill, and I had no idea that they were also a Sustainable PGH Restaurant! The crepes were SO good, and I definitely felt doubly as good supporting them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Melinda Angeles 4/07/2021 10:01 AMI like walking to pick up things from my Buy Nothing group for my neighborhood. Not only do I connect with neighbors, but I also familiarize myself with the neighborhood and fun quirks, city steps, and other nooks and crannies I wouldn't have seen otherwise.-
Melinda Angeles 4/08/2021 5:33 AMTotally! But I am also part of Second Chance Gives so I do walk a bit further on weekends :-D -
Deaglan McManus 4/08/2021 5:31 AMMy walks have gotten a lot shorter to pick-up/drop-off things from the Buy Nothing group ever since the east end neighborhoods split into our own groups. :-)
