Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Rosie Akester 4/30/2021 1:44 PM
choosing peat free soils in my garden centre is the best way for me to help protect the peatlands
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Rosie Akester's avatar
    Rosie Akester 4/30/2021 1:43 PM
It is linked to income. We don't need to rely on meat for protein though....... plant based protein is good for us and the planet :). It is easier for richer countries to choose plant based protein
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

My family has eyes bigger than their stomachs! So definitely better for our waist lines :)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions Research and Advocate for High-Speed Rail
What are the factors that influence your choice of transportation? These can include things like money, time, and convenience, as well as perceptions of danger or safety. What would need to change for you to regularly choose more climate-friendly options?

    Rosie Akester's avatar
    Rosie Akester 4/30/2021 3:10 AM
Cost & time are big factors. COVID also means that journeys we would have done by train… we would now prefer to use our car. Choosing more local destinations would help us be more climate friendly in the current situation.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe states that "The reason we care about climate change is because it affects the people and places that we care about." What is happening (or will happen) in your area that will affect the people and places you care about?

I live on the coast so any rising sea levels will impact the communities near where I live. Additionally the risk to flooding is high in the towns.

Consumption. My hope is that by converting to green consumption we will move to being in balance with the planet, my fear is that our consumption levels (whether green or not) are still too high......
