  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Support Local Food Systems
Dependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?

The advantage that inspires me the most is having access to dependable fresh food. One of my biggest problems for not doing something is not having access to it. I can support local farmers by buying their fresh food and I think that leads to building resilient communities.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

I can repair something but if that's not possible then I can repurpose it for something else. I think finding ways to implement these into my lifestyle can be a fun way to tap into my creative side and potentially lead to a new hobby.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

I can refill, repair, and repeat!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

I can buy other products that are made from recycled materials such as trash bags, plastic bottles, and even countertops.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

I have learned that people eat more meat in richer countries as there is a higher demand for it there and they can afford it. The high demand for meat means more area for the animals and this comes from clearing land. There is also an incredible amount of methane released that is more potent than CO2.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Zero-waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

I have recently learned that the roots and some skins have more nutrients than the rest of the vegetable. The stems can be used to make a stock or you can put these scraps through a juicer if you're into that. You can eat everything from a potato which is why I think its a great vegetable.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

Knowing what these terms actually refer to instead of thinking they all mean the food is bad after that date means you have more time to consume them and not contribute to food waste.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

Industrial dumping and agricultural fertilizers and pesticides being dumped in water is very harmful to us, especially to whatever lives in it.
I can improve the health of water systems by building a rain garden. This will allow collected water to soak into the ground to reduce runoff.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Support Nutrient Management

A healthy environment can definitely improve someone's mood and well being. When it comes to community, if everyone is doing their part to maintain a healthy clean environment then there is this sense of community where everybody is on the same page to maintain a goal.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Composting
Producing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?

What got me to change my behavior regarding food waste was water and hours of labor. Water waste is already a huge problem but also thinking of the hours of labor going into growing the food and I could just throw it away in a matter of seconds really bothered me.
