Electricity
Learn More about Biomass
Biomass Power
I will spend at least 5 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of biomass.
Electricity
Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
Methane Digesters
I will watch a video about methane digesters (also commonly known as anaerobic digesters).
Electricity
Rooftop Solar Consultation
Distributed Solar Photovoltaics
After researching the incentives at the federal, state, utility, and local levels, I will contact a local installer/distributor for a solar panel installation consultation on my house.
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Support Companies Leading in Green Energy
Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaics, Distributed Solar Photovoltaics
I will use my spending power to reward companies leading in creating or purchasing green energy and incentivize others to invest more in green energy.
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Donate
Improved Clean Cookstoves
I will donate to nonprofits that install clean cookstoves in low-income countries.
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Support Indigenous Peoples' Land Management
Indigenous Peoples' Forest Tenure
I will donate to Native American Rights Fund, which protects tribal natural resources and environmental rights and promotes Native American Human Rights.
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Support Local Food Systems
Plant-Rich Diets
I will source 1 percent of my food from local producers each day. This could include signing up for a local CSA, buying from a farmer's market, visiting a food co-op, foraging with a local group, or growing my own ingredients.
Land Sinks
Choose Better Wood Products
Forest Protection
I will only purchase wood and paper products from ecologically certified sources like Forest Stewardship Council.
Land Sinks
Buy Bamboo
Bamboo Production
When they are available, I will purchase products made from bamboo instead of wood, plastic, or metal.
Buildings
Plan to Insulate
Insulation
I will find out how to make my home more energy efficient through better insulation and weatherization.
Buildings
Install Heat Pumps
Currently installing heat pumps at my home. It will save green house gas emissions when I install solar panels later this year. I currently have hot water radiant heat with a fuel oil "boiler" and window AC units. The heat pumps will be much more efficient than either of those technologies.
Electricity
Choose LED Bulbs
LED Lighting
I will replace 10 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Electricity
Calculate My Carbon Footprint
All Drawdown Solutions
I will calculate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce my negative impact on the environment.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More about BiomassHad you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!
Adrian Wetzel 4/28/2021 7:39 AMIn my last home I heated the entire house with a pellet stove so I have been aware of the technology. I have learned that there are many more feedstocks besides sawdust that can be used to make pellets. I also learned that there is small scale pellet making equipment geared for the single home owner. I will be looking into making my own pellets with some type of grass which I can grow on my own land. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Watch a Video about Methane DigestersWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Adrian Wetzel 4/28/2021 7:17 AMCarbon neutrality is a good start for a sustainable community. People will need to be willing to change and take some time to separate their trash for example. They will also be willing to deal with odors from decomposing bio-mass if they don't get it to the digester in time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Plan to InsulateWhat are some of the benefits of making your home more energy efficient?
Adrian Wetzel 4/28/2021 7:01 AMReducing fuel oil consumption, energy bill and my carbon foot print are the main benefits to a more energy efficient home. Elimination of drafts on cold windy winter nights is another great thing. Some unthought of benefits are the reduced amounts of dust, pollen and insects coming in through air gaps.
