Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 60 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Health and Education
Learn about the Need for Family Planning
Health and Education
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the need for family planning globally.
Industry
Share Bioplastic Disposal Tips

I will spend at least 30 minutes researching how to properly dispose of bioplastics in my city and share this information with 2 friends, family and/or colleagues.
Health and Education
Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
Health and Education
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the barriers to women's equal participation and representation around the world.
Electricity
Electric cars
study the energy efficiency of electric cars including battery life, power production and disposal at end of lifetime.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Tend A Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Land Sinks
Research Peatlands
Peatland Protection and Rewetting
I will spend 30 minutes researching the environmental benefits of peatlands and what is being done around the world to conserve and restore them.
Land Sinks
Forest-Friendly Foods 1
Tropical Forest Restoration
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching the impact of my diet to see how it contributes to deforestation.
Land Sinks
Buy Bamboo
Bamboo Production
When they are available, I will purchase products made from bamboo instead of wood, plastic, or metal.
Action Track: Climate Resilience
Learn about 'Green Gentrification'
Multiple Solutions
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about green gentrification and how it relates to city planning for climate action.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Keep Track of Wasted Food
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Earth Month Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.
Industry
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bioplastics
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and BIPOC-majority neighborhoods. I will avoid buying and using 1 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.
Action Track: Climate Resilience
Learn More about Biomass
Biomass Power
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of biomass.
Industry
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Smart Seafood Choices
Ocean Farming
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 120 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Transportation
Conduct Virtual Meetings
Telepresence
I will encourage my office to hold meetings virtually whenever possible instead of requiring travel.
Transportation
Use Muscle Power
Multiple Transportation Solutions
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Electricity
Calculate My Carbon Footprint
All Drawdown Solutions
I will calculate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce my negative impact on the environment.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Katrin Werlen 4/30/2021 8:02 AMI think this ecochallenge was a great experience. I already do a lot of things, bit still my CO2 footprint is too big. It was good to be pushed to think again about my actions, what I can improve and where I can influence things. Let‘s keep it up and continue, there is still a lot to do! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Research PeatlandsMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Katrin Werlen 4/30/2021 8:00 AMCheck the ingredients of products. Try to avoid palmoil or only if it comes from sustainable sources. Buy local stuff or cook it yourself from scratch, then you can be absolutely sure what ingredients are in your meal! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Share Bioplastic Disposal TipsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Katrin Werlen 4/30/2021 7:57 AMIn the western world people use too many resources. People use more than two planets. On the other hand poorer people don‘t use many resources but because they have no access to education, equality, healthcare,... they often have a lot of children, which leads to a double overpopulation from both our western world and the developing countries. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Buy BambooAre bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?
Katrin Werlen 4/30/2021 7:52 AMI didn‘t buy any bamboo at all, but more because I didn‘t need anything. But bamboo is definitely a good alternative, although local wood is certainly a goid alternative too -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Learn about the Need for Family PlanningWhat did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?
Katrin Werlen 4/28/2021 10:12 AMFamily planning is about empowering women. If they have a better education they have a chance to decide themselves if and when they want to have children and they have a better access to health care. It also means they will have less children by choice. Less children means less people leaving on our planet, which means less resources are used and climate gas emitted. In essence a very easy solution which helps people as well as nature. -
Katrin Werlen 4/28/2021 10:07 AMEven if the weather is not perfect it is worth going out. You will see much more wildlife when there are less hikers around. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate Resilience Learn More about BiomassHad you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!
Katrin Werlen 4/27/2021 7:19 AMI have heard of it before. Although it is counted as renewable energy the „fuel“ type has to chosen wisely to make it a true renewable. Also from my previous knowledge the input needs to be o a certain quality to make the biomass power plant working smoothly. It was interesting to read that this technology is viewed as a transition technology before we are really fully renewable. -
Katrin Werlen 4/27/2021 7:12 AMStill enjoying holidays and still not missing a car at all! You have so much more time to enjoy the scenery when you go slower. So another wonderful bike ride today -
Katrin Werlen 4/25/2021 8:29 AMHoliday time! We decided to go by bike this time, so we don‘t even start to emit CO2. Great bike trip, 85km, great scenery and getting to your holiday place feels even more rewarding -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Katrin Werlen 4/24/2021 2:18 PMI live very close to the forest in a wonderful environment. I love going for walks and watch the change in nature over time. I also enjoy the local plants. Thanks to my studies I know most of them and also which ones are edible. Since I have kids I want them to know what is around them and we collect berries, mushrooms and other edible plants to use them in our kitchen. My son also became an enthusiast nature photographer and I strongly believe that you will better protect what you love. So I hope to pass on part of my passion for nature to the next generation.
