REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Garden Work Day with earthday365What were one or two takeaways from the environmental justice presentation or your volunteer experience today?
Jess Watson 4/15/2021 1:23 PMLast weekend's Garden Day with earthday365, A Red Circle, and Custom Foodscaping was rainy, muddy, physically intensive, and truly a beautiful experience. We constructed 30 beds, planted half of them with potatoes, and laid down mulch rows. The garden is in Pine Lawn at the North County Agricultural Education Program, and aims to provide education combating food apartheid. I'm still in awe that 40 people showed that level of commitment in the pouring rain - amazing! We'll be at a clean-up in O'Fallon Park in North St. Louis this Sunday - you can find info here if you want to join! https://earthday-365.org/environmental-justice-days-of-action/ -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Jess Watson 4/06/2021 6:50 AMIt was such a joy this morning to walk with my 6yo son to the polling place, walk to his elementary school, and walk to work. 14 months ago, I would have been sitting in traffic on Hwy 40 that entire time. So glad I shifted my life towards walkability!

REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Recycle Everything I CanHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?
Jess Watson 4/05/2021 10:01 AMIt's crazy how much confusion there STILL is about recycling - even among folks who are a little sustainably-minded. Perhaps even more so, because they WANT to recycle everything and end up wish-cycling. I was just asked yesterday during Easter Brunch how to recycle batteries, by someone who is smart and generally informed but felt at a complete loss for what to do (hint: start by buying rechargeables and circumvent the problem in the first place)!-
Victoria Coleman 4/05/2021 11:41 AMJess, the confusion is real! It's great that that person had you as a valuable resource to consult when they were unsure of what to do. Meeting people where they are is the greatest thing we can do, so kudos to you! I am always interested in looking at how other countries are handling recycling, especially places like Germany, South Korea, and Taiwan that have this whole thing pretty nailed down! To see how we can work to keep people more informed on what can and can't be recycled and increase the rate of recycling locally! Whenever I think about the percentage of goods that are actually recycled, it breaks my heart :')

REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Find a Local Climate-Friendly SupermarketHow close is the nearest climate-friendly supermarket to your home? How could you encourage local supermarket to reduce or phase out their use of HFC refrigerants?
Jess Watson 4/02/2021 4:23 AMOK, mind thoroughly blown. Supermarket refrigerant leaks are a major cause of greenhouse gases? And there is an alternative? And the local supermarkets using natural coolants are ALDIs in St. Ann, Wentzville, and Fairview Heights????-
Maggie McCoy 4/05/2021 9:48 AMI know! I have been listening to the How to Save a Planet podcast with Dr. Ayana Johnson who was one of the editors of All We Can Save. They did an episode on refrigerants that included a discussion on the grocery store component. I think the episode was called Cold Hard Cash for Your Greenhouse Gas. It is also crazy that so few in the St. Louis are doing it. And why not all Aldis?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Jess Watson 4/01/2021 1:13 PMI love it when research I for my job overlaps with Ecochallenges! With earthday365's focus on food waste reduction in St. Louis families, we'll be doing education around how consumers can waste less, and understanding printed dates on food is essential. The variations in language are confusing, but it boils down to a very simple point - none of the printed dates mean the food is necessarily dangerous to eat after that date. You need to check it to see if it is spoiled (through visual or olfactory cues). The printed dates are suggestions, and are not federally regulated. I think this simple piece of information could end lots of household food waste! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Watch a Video about Methane DigestersWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Jess Watson 4/01/2021 10:30 AMVery excited to watch the short video on Anaerobic digester technology because earthday365 has had a strong focus on reducing food waste and I have this pipe dream of writing an EPA grant to get a digester in partnership with a network of restaurants, school district, municipal waste program or university. It could break down cafeteria or yard/food waste and produce biogas to offset energy needs. Would be so cool to bring this technology to the region as an educational tool! -
Jess Watson 4/01/2021 10:21 AMVery excited to kick off Earth Month with all of you! If you want to check out more great events, find out how to get your hands on an Earth Day Celebration Kit, and lots more, check out earthday365's Earth Month page: https://earthday-365.org/earth-month-2021/-
Victoria Coleman 4/01/2021 2:04 PMThank you so much for sharing this resource, Jess!! earthday365 has so many awesome events and programming happening this month!!
