REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric VehicleReducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?
Nathan Volkmann 4/30/2021 6:12 AMApart from the green and health benefits, a more fuel-efficient car will cost less in the long run since it will take less trips to the gas station. It can also reduce dependence on foreign fuel and make the US more self-sufficient. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Nathan Volkmann 4/26/2021 7:46 AMI had not heard of silvopature before now. Silvopasture is the incorporation of trees and pastures into a single ecosystem. The biggest advantage of such a system is the vast increase in carbon sequestering (5 to 10 time as much!). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Research the Climate Impact of RefrigerantsWhat did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?
Nathan Volkmann 4/26/2021 6:41 AMThe impact of refrigerants on global warming is substantial, up to thousands of times greater than an equivalent amount of CO2. Supermarkets use a large amount of refrigerator space and supermarkets that do not use greener alternatives such as propane or ammonium are contributing much more to global warming than those that do. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Calculate My Carbon FootprintWhat stood out to you most about your carbon footprint? What surprised you or sparked curiosity? Where can you take most immediate action?
Nathan Volkmann 4/16/2021 6:10 AMIt would take 2.9 earths if everyone had the same lifestyle as me. What surprised me is how much diet can play a role in increasing one's carbon footprint. Not only do livestock farms have a huge negative impact but I also never really considered how eating locally sourced food could have such a positive impact. I will try and reflect on the role my diet can have on the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Explore Other Electricity SolutionsWhat is the most exciting solution you explored? Why is it exciting to you?
Nathan Volkmann 4/16/2021 6:02 AMUntil large scale efficient battery storage is developed, I found the most interesting energy source was nuclear. It uses the splitting of uranium to create steam and spin a turbine to create energy. The main byproduct it releases into the air is water instead of CO2. It also can be run year round in most climates and isn't dependent on the weather. There are also downsides. It does produce radioactive waste which must be kept and stored. Safety regulations must also be extensively followed to avoid meltdown. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Building With Carbon Storing Waste ProductsHow feasible do you think it is for society to build with agricultural waste products?
Nathan Volkmann 4/16/2021 5:52 AMThere are many factors that need to be considered when attempting to switch to green products, Besides the monetary cost of switching, the footprint of the entire process must be considered as well. If the transport, processing, and usability result in a greater carbon footprint, it ends up being a net negative. If biodegradables don't last as long as the alternative, it could also contribute to the footprint. The goal should always be to strive for greener, cheaper, and stronger building materials. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Research Heat PumpsWhy is taking action on climate change important to you? Why do you care?
Nathan Volkmann 4/16/2021 5:47 AMRising global temperatures will have a devastating impact on the entire planet if left unchecked. The high temps could make certain areas of the planet uninhabitable. Melting of the polar ice caps will release additional greenhouse gases and contribute to the runaway effect. Even if the planet was able entirely eliminate releasing greenhouses gases into the atmosphere, things would not return to normal instantly. The soon we all start, the better. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Learn about BiocharCan biochar provide additional benefits besides sequestering carbon?
Nathan Volkmann 4/14/2021 11:09 AMBiochar is a great tool in the effort to combat rising CO2 levels but also has other values in addition to sequestering carbon. In particular, biochar is a great asset in farming by increasing soil pH levels resulting in lower acidity. This can help crops providing higher soil fertility that increases crop yields.
