Save Rigaud Mountain

Rigaud Mountain is an expansive natural resource that we rely upon to run many of our Outdoor Education courses, here at JAC. It is under extreme pressure from development and mismanagement, and in desperate need of protection. Facing COVID and the Climate Crisis, the need to protect our few remaining local intact forests, is more stronger than ever. We need them, for our health and wellness, and they are disappearing. If you are able, please support this important cause and take a few moments to forward this letter to others who understand its importance. The petition and funding pages are accessible through the "Learn More" button.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

I'm not personally a fan of sea food to begin with. However, my parents are conscious of where they buy fish in order to support sustainable fishing practices.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

I went for a walk along Lakeshore! I was really able to appreciate the public spaces by the waterfront since the weather was nice.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Education
Globally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. What have you done in the past to support women-owned businesses? How can you better support communities by supporting women?

When shopping online, I like to support smaller businesses--especially businesses run by women--if possible.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
How does advocating for green vehicles in your community connect to your values? How might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the shift to fuel-efficient vehicles?

JAC should dedicate more parking spots to electric vehicles!

I did some research and found out that Facebook has recently been accused of redlining practices in its advertisements for housing.

Good on you for doing some research and going beyond to feed your curiosity.  Many companies who seem to play fair, are really not doing great things.  They should be called out for it!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Action Track: Climate Resilience
Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?

Montreal's Saint Henri neighbourhood and the Lachine canal were case studies I found while researching green gentrification. I had no idea that green gentrification was at play in Montreal. It seems that Montreal's municipal government has failed to balance climate action with social justice in one of the city's poorest areas.

Hmmm ... but we need to get rid of plastic and I thought the best alternative was to go back to using glass, which can really be recycled.  What could replace plastic if not glass?
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Action Track: Climate Resilience
What are the factors that influence your choice of transportation? These can include things like money, time, and convenience, as well as perceptions of danger or safety. What would need to change for you to regularly choose more climate-friendly options?

I found a helpful fact sheet about the development of high speed rail worldwide. I'll link it below. It seems like North America is lagging behind Europe and China because of our car culture.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

It turns out I'm not always super hungry...I just eat quickly while distracted by my phone
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

I noticed the flurries today. I enjoyed the fresh air and the waterfront. More walking paths would make my walks easier and more enjoyable!
