  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Properly Dispose of Refrigerants
How do you address your own feelings of concern, fear or despair about climate change?

    Lisa Thamer's avatar
    Lisa Thamer 4/30/2021 12:48 AM
I address my concern about climate change by educating myself how I can reduce my negative impact and trying to change my ways to achieve a lower carbon footprint.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Lisa Thamer's avatar
    Lisa Thamer 4/28/2021 11:39 PM
By making the switch to a vegetarian diet 2 years ago, I've already contributed to a more forest-friendly diet. However, buying locally and only what is in season (if possible, unpackaged) as well as wasting less food (f.e. by disregarding best by dates and eating food as long as it is safe to eat) will have another positive impact.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Explore My Area
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

    Lisa Thamer's avatar
    Lisa Thamer 4/28/2021 11:38 PM
We tend to become "blind" to our surroundings. I actually live in a beautiful place on a mountain. There are forests behind our house and deer living there. There's a lot of flora and fauna to be enjoyed, yet the only interaction is glancing at it when going to and coming back from work. We should stop and appreciate more, but it's hard in our fast-paced lives.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Purchase a Carbon Offset
A round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?

    Lisa Thamer's avatar
    Lisa Thamer 4/23/2021 1:46 AM
I think COVID-19 has taught us all very well that a lot of work can be done remotely, thereby reducing flights taken. Even training on machines can be done remotely (with VR glasses), not just meetings!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Find a Local Climate-Friendly Supermarket
How close is the nearest climate-friendly supermarket to your home? How could you encourage local supermarket to reduce or phase out their use of HFC refrigerants?

    Lisa Thamer's avatar
    Lisa Thamer 4/23/2021 1:44 AM
Unfortunately, the nearest climate-friendly supermarket is way too far away (approx. 250 km). But I did sign a petition for local supermarkets to go climate-friendly!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions Support Companies Leading in Green Energy
Every dollar you put into solar or wind is a dollar not put into traditional financial institutions. You'll also be bolstering the fossil fuel divestment movement, too. Name some companies you know that invest in green energy. How can you support them?

    Lisa Thamer's avatar
    Lisa Thamer 4/23/2021 1:43 AM
I know that Kelag, one of Austria's biggest energy suppliers, offers (partially) green energy.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

    Lisa Thamer's avatar
    Lisa Thamer 4/23/2021 1:43 AM
Other steps to reduce electricity usage are turning off lights when not needed and unplugging appliances when not used and.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

    Lisa Thamer's avatar
    Lisa Thamer 4/22/2021 11:48 PM
I learned that refrigerants are not only used in refrigerators and freezers but even in air conditioning units. Supermarkets contribute to this impact due to the numerous refrigeration units they employ.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Lisa Thamer's avatar
    Lisa Thamer 4/21/2021 11:59 PM
Knowing the difference helps to avoid wasting food that could easily be consumed for a few more days or even weeks after the best by dates. This in turn not only saves money but landfills from overflowing as well. It's a win-win situation!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Lisa Thamer's avatar
    Lisa Thamer 4/15/2021 11:32 PM
While I am "guilty" of buying fast fashion sometimes, I try to reduce this impact by only buying what I need (no excessive hauls) and taking good care of the garments, making them last longer.
