Health and Education Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Patti Jo Tennyson's avatar
Patti Jo Tennyson 4/30/2021 5:31 PM
Barriers include structural issues in society and in corporate settings. They are demonstrated by prevailing perceptions of gender and leadership. They are presented in forms of prejudices and discrimination. Women's responses to these barrier also complicate the issue.
The difficulty in juggling work and personal life, particularly caring responsibilities for children and aged parents; The lack of support among women, women's lack of self-confidence and lack of sponsorship for women in workplaces.  There is lack of commitment from leaders and executive teams towards gender diversity.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

    Patti Jo Tennyson's avatar
Patti Jo Tennyson 4/30/2021 5:18 PM
Here are some steps I can take each day to reduce my electricity usage:
Shutdown my computer.(Computers are some of the biggest energy users in office buildings).
    Choose energy efficient lighting.
    Unplug idle electronics.
Use a power strip to reduce your plug load.
    Turn off the lights.
Use a programmable or smart thermostat.

    Donate unused items
After a long, busy month of the Eco Challenge and preparing our dad's home for sale due to his passing, the house sold and we will donate the items that were left to stage his home.
Number 18 on the list of ways to live amore sustainable life.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Make School More Affordable
Why is it important that girls have equal access to education in order to reduce our global greenhouse gas emissions?

    Patti Jo Tennyson's avatar
Patti Jo Tennyson 4/30/2021 4:30 PM
Research suggests that education helps women better understand the dangers of global warming and prepare for disasters.
In Drawdown, Hawken argues that one of the most effective solutions to climate change is educating women and girls.
Education and environmental education empowers women and girls to be more effective and resilient stewards of food, soil, trees, and water, even as nature's cycles change and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Connect With A Nonprofit
What are the most pressing issues for women, girls, and trans/nonbinary people in your community?

    Patti Jo Tennyson's avatar
Patti Jo Tennyson 4/30/2021 4:21 PM
Domestic violence against women is "any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual, or mental harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life." Body image is one issue related to girls and young  women.
While attitudes are largely positive, large sects of the population still believe transgender people have a mental illness, or are committing a sin.  As for trans/nonbinary, the term gender binary describes the system in which a society allocates its members into one of two sets of gender roles, gender identities, and attributes based on the type of genitalia.  All issues people in our community are facing.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions Contact your Elected Officials
Do you have any personal connections to a farm or farmland? If so, what are they? What feelings are evoked for you when thinking about declining farmland?

    Patti Jo Tennyson's avatar
Patti Jo Tennyson 4/30/2021 3:55 PM
I have connections to both farms and farmland.
I was born and raised on a dairy farm.  Generations of my family
    were dairy farmers.
As an adult, I married into a family with property of several hundred acres of farm land, bordering state land in the Adirondacks.  No longer an operating sheep farm, it's a NYS designated tree farm with a saw mill.  The woodlands have been carefully logged and maintained with a select forester.
Declining farmland is called abandoned or derelict farmland.  This land often is an environmental liability, in need of remedy.
Abandoned farmland has experienced at least two changeovers.
First, when its natural vegetation was removed to create farmland and then again when agricultural crops no longer were cultivated.  When thinking about declining farmland, it  invokes a feeling of sadness for me.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Patti Jo Tennyson's avatar
Patti Jo Tennyson 4/30/2021 3:34 PM
Soy & Beef are items on my current diet regiment.
Soy is the main culprit when it comes to deforestation in food. More than 80% of soy is fed to animals such as pigs – which is the pork sausages in your breakfast fry up. Unsustainable soy might also be fed to the chicken's providing your eggs.
Beef production is the top driver of deforestation in the world's tropical forests. The forest conversion it generates more than doubles that generated by the production of soy, palm oil, and wood products (the second, third, and fourth biggest drivers) combined.
I can change the impact on deforestation by decreasing consumption soy and beef products and supplement with an alternative.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Spread the Word about Energy Alternatives
What inspiration and wisdom can you gather from your family, faith, or community traditions that would help you in both communicating about and addressing our most pressing energy issues?

    Patti Jo Tennyson's avatar
Patti Jo Tennyson 4/30/2021 3:16 PM
The world lacks safe, low-carbon, and cheap large-scale energy alternatives to fossil fuels. Until we scale up those alternatives the world will continue to face the two energy problems of today. The energy problem that receives most attention attention is the link between energy access and greenhouse gas emissions.
    Here are some possible solutions:
    Solar (photovoltaic, solar thermal)
    Wind
Biogas (e.g., landfill gas/wastewater treatment digester gas)
    Geothermal
    Biomass
    Low-impact hydroelectricity
Emerging technologies - wave and tidal power

Day 30 - the final day of the Eco Challenge
    Today we celebrate Arbor Day.  This special day is set aside throughout the world to raise awareness of trees and the important role that they play in our environment. There many way in which the day is celebrated including;
    1.  Raise the flag
    2.  Organize a beautification project in a public area
    3.  Get people into action - tree planting
    4.  Hold a poster contest, or a poetry contest
    5.  Sponsor a children's pageant or play
    6.  Fill the air with music
    7.  Sponsor a tree trivia contest
    8.  Conduct a tree search

Of all the things I have studied during the Eco Challenge, learning about the importance of trees is my greatest take away.  Today and each Arbor Day, I will plant a tree at our home.  20 years from now, I'll look back and remember the significance of Arbor Day!
