Book Review Event
Help set up a book review event (1 hour meeting) with interested members (over 300) for a review of Bill Gates new book "Avoiding a climate disaster"
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Spread the Word about Energy Alternatives
All Electricity Solutions
I will research and tell 2 people each day about the benefits of alternative energy sources like wind turbines, solar energy, geothermal energy, and methane digesters.
Buildings
Explore Other Buildings Solutions
All Buildings Solutions
I will spend at least 45 minutes researching other Drawdown Buildings Solutions.
Electricity
Choose LED Bulbs
LED Lighting
I will replace 2 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Health and Education
Support Businesses Owned by Women, BIPOC, or Immigrants
Sustainable Intensification for Smallholders
I will spend 15 minutes researching businesses owned by women, immigrants, and Black, Indigenous, and people of color that I can support when shopping.
Electricity
Learn More about Biomass
Biomass Power
I will spend at least 50 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of biomass.
Industry
Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
Refrigerant Management
I will spend 45 minute(s) learning about the climate impact of refrigerants and what climate-friendly refrigerants are by using the links below.
Industry
Research Cement Alternatives
Alternative Cement
I will spend at least 60 minutes researching cement alternatives that reduce the carbon footprint of concrete.
Land Sinks
Research Peatlands
Peatland Protection and Rewetting
I will spend 45 minutes researching the environmental benefits of peatlands and what is being done around the world to conserve and restore them.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Building With Carbon Storing Waste Products
Engineered Sinks
I will spend at least 60 minutes researching how people can build with carbon-storing materials - including agricultural byproducts - and discuss it with my peers in person or by posting to social media.
Electricity
Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
Onshore Wind Turbines, Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaics
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will purchase Renewable Energy Credits to match my usage.
Electricity
Calculate My Carbon Footprint
All Drawdown Solutions
I will calculate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce my negative impact on the environment.
Industry
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
compile graphics for book review
For Gate's book, compile related graphics on evidence.
Buildings
Switch to green power
Switch from ComEd to alternative green power source as authorized by town.
Electricity
Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
Methane Digesters
I will watch a video about methane digesters (also commonly known as anaerobic digesters).
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Tend A Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 1 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Buildings
Research Heat Pumps
High-Efficiency Heat Pumps
I will spend at least 50 minutes researching heat pumps to see if installing one makes sense for my home/building.
Land Sinks
Local Perennial Biomass
Perennial Biomass Production
I will spend at least 45 minutes finding out if anyone is working on perennial biomass projects in my region and how I can get involved.

Walking event
help plan a mid day walk via a internet meeting setup to set up the discussion and have participants contribute their photos or dialogue while walking.

REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
Francis Staskon 4/30/2021 12:39 PMAlthough for some products recycling is rather simple (e.g., paper, cardboard, glass, and types 1 or 2 plastics), most items still have a mixture of components and of rather small size to recycle. Reduction and reuse still are the most direct ways to reduce environmental polution. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryConcrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but its carbon footprint may not be obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?
Francis Staskon 4/26/2021 7:36 PMIt appears that alternatives to cement are few, especially for large scale construction projects.
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?
Francis Staskon 4/23/2021 1:07 PMI think to make real progress on alternative refrigerants we need quick and substantial investments to produce greater availability in the markets. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityWhat stood out to you most about your carbon footprint? What surprised you or sparked curiosity? Where can you take most immediate action?
Francis Staskon 4/19/2021 1:17 PMFound I was 47% less a foot print compared to my zipcode with one method or an ecological footprint of 5.4 compared to US average of 8.1 (also some 40% less). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Francis Staskon 4/13/2021 9:06 AMI'm glad several towns around La Grange voted to go green last year and not offer alternative electric providers to COM Ed as a default. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Francis Staskon 4/13/2021 9:00 AMThe importance of methane released from biological processes is greater than most people realize and a real challenge to addressing climate change.
