Save Rigaud Mountain

Rigaud Mountain is an expansive natural resource that we rely upon to run many of our Outdoor Education courses, here at JAC. It is under extreme pressure from development and mismanagement, and in desperate need of protection. Facing COVID and the Climate Crisis, the need to protect our few remaining local intact forests, is more stronger than ever. We need them, for our health and wellness, and they are disappearing. If you are able, please support this important cause and take a few moments to forward this letter to others who understand its importance. The petition and funding pages are accessible through the "Learn More" button.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Ragne Raceviciute's avatar
    Ragne Raceviciute 4/26/2021 9:25 AM
I don't think these differences between Best before and whatever the other dates are make much impact on my choices. The more useful information was about the actual life-span of certain products, such as the products that stay edible for years, and the instructions of how to keep the products.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. How would you rather use this money?

    Ragne Raceviciute's avatar
    Ragne Raceviciute 4/26/2021 8:26 AM
I would use this money to improve the energy efficiency of the home, or on getting everyone a bike and all the protection to be biking as opposed to taking the car, or on buying products that might be more expensive but locally produced and organic.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Action Track: Climate Resilience
Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?

    Ragne Raceviciute's avatar
    Ragne Raceviciute 4/26/2021 8:20 AM
Right, that is a great question. This is what I was going write in this reflection - that I will look at Montreal's official government page and check what development is being planned and how it takes eco-justice into consideration. Or not. I have heard a lot about efforts to stop gentrification, but not green gentrification. So I need to investigate this topic.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
Beyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?

    Ragne Raceviciute's avatar
    Ragne Raceviciute 4/19/2021 2:14 PM
Peace and beauty and a place to walk and connect to the earth. The forest also gives me a lot of mushrooms, and raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, etc.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

    Ragne Raceviciute's avatar
    Ragne Raceviciute 4/19/2021 11:40 AM
I don't think there is one thing that concerns me most. The waste isa. huge problem, and the damage done to the marine life is another huge problem. The dependence on fossil fuels is so deep-rooted that it is difficult to believe in any concrete change in the visible future. The mentality of most people has to change, but it will not happen untill there is an palpable damage to each and everyone's livelihood...

  • Ragne Raceviciute's avatar
    Ragne Raceviciute 4/16/2021 9:48 AM
Because working on the eco challenge makes me feel better, about myself and about the future of the world.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
What did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?

    Ragne Raceviciute's avatar
    Ragne Raceviciute 4/16/2021 9:48 AM
I leaned that  company in France is researching and designing how to turn human urine into fertilizer! That sounds so cool:)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

    Ragne Raceviciute's avatar
    Ragne Raceviciute 4/16/2021 8:52 AM
When I bike to my destination, I notice more the state of the streets, sidewalks, and on-ramps for disabled people. That makes me more aware of the different needs of city-dwellers and of the importance of making every location accessible to everyone.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Ragne Raceviciute's avatar
    Ragne Raceviciute 4/02/2021 11:17 AM
Because meat is relatively cheap, especially regular meat, of animals that are fed regular non-organic food and grown on hormones.
As for how more meat affects the body, it is a known fact that too much read meat causes cancer. In general, meat is more difficult to digest and makes one heavy. Fat meat is a risk for heart disease, clogged arteries, and obesity.
