I eat a LOT of peanut butter but almost all comes with palm oil.  But - I made the switch and now have much bigger forearms from stirring all that peanut butter

How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

    Lacey Raak's avatar
    Lacey Raak 4/26/2021 3:19 PM
I planted a tree in my neighbors yard (I did ask first!), 2 in our yard and one one in a local park.  Also collected over 75 acorn and gave to a local group, Return of the Natives, to have trees started from local acorns...it improves the survival rate of the tree.

I opted out of some magazine and junk mail.  Target, Duluth Trading Company and Boden.  Not sure how I got on the list but some we receive multiple copies of...annoying from an environmental perspective and also helps support my goal of purchasing less.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Find a Local Climate-Friendly Supermarket
How close is the nearest climate-friendly supermarket to your home? How could you encourage local supermarket to reduce or phase out their use of HFC refrigerants?

    Lacey Raak's avatar
    Lacey Raak 4/21/2021 8:34 AM
Very disappointing to not have a climate-friendly grocery store in this area.  There is a new market that opened that may meet the requirement but not be registered here. Elroys in Monterey.  I will ask them, next time I pop in.  The closest store is in the San Jose area.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. How would you rather use this money?

    Lacey Raak's avatar
    Lacey Raak 4/21/2021 8:28 AM
I have been weighing my compost all month.  My family of 4 has thrown away 353 ounces of food to date.  This includes banana peels and compostable packaging as well as food that was not eaten.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Support Businesses Owned by Women, BIPOC, or Immigrants
Globally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. What have you done in the past to support women-owned businesses? How can you better support communities by supporting women?

    Lacey Raak 4/13/2021 9:49 AM
I try to do this in an ongoing way, however I spent a lot of time finding a venue for a private birthday dinner in Minneapolis. So many restaurants are operated by or have men in the Chef role, disproportionately so, despite the high number of women that have led the way in "culinary arts" - whether it be for their family or at a 5-star restaurant.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Climate Resilience Learn about 'Green Gentrification'
Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?

    Lacey Raak 4/12/2021 10:31 AM
The "process in which cleaning up pollution or providing green amenities increases local property values and attracts wealthier residents to a previously polluted or disenfranchised neighbourhood."  This seems to be a continuation of the historic trend that separates poorer people from the environment - reserving it for the wealthy.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Reduce Single-Use Disposables
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Lacey Raak 4/07/2021 12:36 PM
While I have eliminated grocery bags, coffee cups, one area where I find a lot of plastic is bread bags and contact solutions...Im going to try buying bread from a bakery rather than the grocery store...
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Conduct Virtual Meetings
How can you ensure that your virtual meetings honor your values and your company's culture?

    Lacey Raak's avatar
    Lacey Raak 4/06/2021 2:39 PM
This one was pretty easy in the COVID world, but I have been advocating to continue to allow remote work and virtual meetings into the future
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

    Lacey Raak's avatar
    Lacey Raak 4/05/2021 11:59 AM
I buy only second hand and always try to know where the items are coming from. Also just being ok with not being "on-trend" according to society.  I really like clothes with a story and I still have things from high school!
