Biomass produces 5% of total primary energy use in the U.S. in 2019. Of that 5%, 46% was from wood and wood-derived biomass, 45% was from biofuels, and 9% from the biomass in municipal wastes. It is not the cleanest energy source among the renewables as burning biomass releases carbon monoxide into the air. Additionally, cutting trees for generating energy or using land for plants solely for biomass energy pose issues with environmental problems and efficient land use.
