Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Learn about Biochar
Biochar Production
I will spend 30 minute(s) learning about biochar and how it can help sequester carbon.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
Reduced Food Waste
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Farm Irrigation Efficiency
I will prevent water runoff and increase absorbency by mulching the base of trees and plants in my yard.
Land Sinks
Plant a pollinator garden
Dedicate 400sq. ft. of my backyard to native wildflowers and plantings to feed bees, butterflies, birds, etc.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 60 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Buildings
Steel Roof Replacement
We purchased the installation of a steel roof for our house. This has the advantage of not using oil in the materials, having a recyclable product, and lasting more than twice as long as the standard asphalt shingle. We will reduce our utilities as a green savings.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Advocate for Wetland ProtectionWhy is it important to protect wetlands?
Shane Phipps 4/29/2021 6:49 AMThese are sinks that reduce flooding, improve water quality, and support habitat. My kids' Scout Troop will do service projects removing invasive plant species and repairing the duck nests. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Install a Low-Flow ShowerheadWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Shane Phipps 4/29/2021 6:43 AMA large behavioral change from the literal ground up. Lawns and landscaping should change in favor of native plantings with rain barrels. We are making progress with a credit going to residents on replacing 5gl toilets for 1-1.6gl versions. -
Shane Phipps 4/28/2021 8:19 AMWe're close to the end. Please what else can be done and close your current actions. Thanks -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Learn about BiocharCan biochar provide additional benefits besides sequestering carbon?
Shane Phipps 4/28/2021 8:18 AMYes as it can provide renewable clean energy. It doesn't exist alone though. Doing it properly requires clean inputs so there needs to be hazardous cleanup in some situations. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Shane Phipps 4/26/2021 8:54 PMThis helps reduce food waste by giving a better idea of the potential spoiling. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Watch a Video about Methane DigestersWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Shane Phipps 4/26/2021 7:10 AMYou can't have sustainable without resilience. This would lead to higher costs up front and of course waste. The question is what can be done with the waste. -
Shane Phipps 4/24/2021 2:00 PMPlease complete your open actions. We have six days left! -
Shane Phipps 4/23/2021 2:10 PMWe go into the last week of the contest. Please get your updates in so we can finish strong. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Purchase a Carbon OffsetA round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?
Shane Phipps 4/23/2021 2:09 PMThe COVID pandemic changed how we interact. Virtual meetings will be a greater part of our future. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Accelerating Solutions Advocate for Forest ProtectionHigher standards of living are very often dependent on moving our environmental costs elsewhere. What are some specific ways in which the environmental impacts of your own lifestyle might be shifted elsewhere?
Shane Phipps 4/21/2021 7:09 AMWe moved to 100% renewable electricity. This puts the source of our power into my home state as opposed to coal states in other parts of the country
