  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

    Mechella Parker's avatar
    Mechella Parker 4/24/2021 7:45 PM
My eating experience these last few weeks have been very joyous. You take the time to actually enjoy your meal, and indulge in healthy conversation with your partner at the dinner table.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Zero-waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

    Mechella Parker's avatar
    Mechella Parker 4/24/2021 7:38 PM
First and foremost stocks or broth! A gold vegetable broth keeps things versatile for vegetarians/vegans and well as meat eaters. Baked goods like zucchini bread, carrot cake even lemon poppyseed muffins require the skins. Keep the skin on all your veggies instead of peeling them off! Like potatoes and
    Zucchini's.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Buildings Research Retrofitting Incentives
How can you share what you have learned in your research with others?

    Mechella Parker's avatar
    Mechella Parker 4/24/2021 7:27 PM
Retrofitting in short is like upgrading an older or a more historic building into something a lot safer. It can improve any systems or buildings overall function by using up to date equipment and technology. Designing retrofits for existing buildings to be more sustainable  will lower operation costs and environmental impacts, and increase building durability.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Mechella Parker's avatar
    Mechella Parker 4/23/2021 1:50 PM
Donating to organizations who specialize in protecting peatlands and reduce our use of paper and palm oil.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Mechella Parker's avatar
    Mechella Parker 4/23/2021 1:34 PM
Many options like clothes swaps. Trading clothes with your friends, families or strangers! Donating to places like goodwill, or any other thrift store and getting items for a very very low price that someone already previously owned! Use different pieces change them around! Make some jeans into shorts or a skirt, a shirt into a dress!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Find a Local Climate-Friendly Supermarket
How close is the nearest climate-friendly supermarket to your home? How could you encourage local supermarket to reduce or phase out their use of HFC refrigerants?

    Mechella Parker's avatar
    Mechella Parker 4/21/2021 5:48 PM
The closest climate friendly market is a Whole Foods about 15 minutes away. The Cool it Campaign has been a great inspiration as far as pushing supermarkets like Walmart to release a plan to phase out HFCs in all locations, monitor and repair its refrigerant leaks and practice responsible disposal. A lay out of companies and alternatives to HFC refrigerants are a great start. As well as stressing the amount of greenhouse gasses grocery stores are producing by using HFC's and how an alternative will significantly drop degrees in global warming.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Climate Resilience Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Mechella Parker's avatar
    Mechella Parker 4/21/2021 4:58 PM
I have not heard of the term until now. I believe the biggest advantage will be the restoration of the forest and wildlife. We need grasslands, shrublands and deep forests to support the widest range of species. Including silvopasture into farmlands can increase vegetation which supports a greater diversity of wildlife.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Buildings Plan to Insulate
What are some of the benefits of making your home more energy efficient?

    Mechella Parker's avatar
    Mechella Parker 4/18/2021 7:11 PM
Who doesn't love a cheaper smud bill right? However there's many benefits of making your home more energy efficient that I plan to practice in my next home ( currently in the process of relocating). First it's a great way to reduce your carbon footprint with a lot of AC blasting during the summer and heaters blasting during the winter a lot of homes produce greenhouse gasses. With proper insulation your house stays drier and warmer during the winter time, no pollutants or mold that's a mix of dampness and heat. Allows for an all around healthier and economically friendly household.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Smart Seafood Choices
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

    Mechella Parker's avatar
    Mechella Parker 4/18/2021 3:41 PM
Per my research I came up on a few types fish I already have in my current diet one being catfish, I don't eat fish often but when I do it's always catfish. Oysters unfortunately due to their price it's not always my first choice but still delicious and a first choice option according to seawatch. I personally do make fish apart of my routine only once a week however overfishing is the cause of shortage of sea life so I try to spread out meals that contain fish.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

    Mechella Parker's avatar
    Mechella Parker 4/15/2021 12:48 PM
A lot less waste! Smaller plates will equate to smaller portions which leaves room for a lot less waste. Smaller plates leave an idea for how much room you have to put food on your plate. So the smaller the plate the less food you can load up making sure to eat what's on your plate first before making another round
