REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Buy BambooAre bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?
Cynthia Page 4/30/2021 11:47 AMBamboo is a highly sustainable plant. ... This makes it a super sustainable alternative due to its naturally renewing properties. Plus, nasty pesticides and chemicals aren't required when harvesting bamboo. This means the cultivation is natural, and never harms the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn about Temperate ForestsAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
Cynthia Page 4/30/2021 11:29 AMThe goals for a transition toward sustainability, as we set them out in Chapter 1, are to meet human needs over the next two generations while reducing hunger and poverty and preserving our environmental life support systems. The activities to approach this goal can only move ahead within the constraints set by resources and the environment. Many people have argued that, unless we make dramatic changes in our human enterprises, the development needed to meet future human needs risks damaging the life-support capabilities of the earth—which in turn would of course prevent society from meeting its goals. In this chapter, we therefore ask two related questions:• What are the greatest threats that humanity will encounter as it attempts to navigate the transition to sustainability?• What are the most promising opportunities for avoiding or circumventing these threats on the path to sustainability -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate Resilience Plant TreesHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Cynthia Page 4/30/2021 11:28 AMSpending time around trees and looking at trees reduces stress, lowers blood pressure and improves mood. Numerous studies show that both exercising in forests and simply sitting looking at trees reduce blood pressure as well as the stress-related hormones cortisol and adrenaline. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Contact your Elected OfficialsDo you have any personal connections to a farm or farmland? If so, what are they? What feelings are evoked for you when thinking about declining farmland?
Cynthia Page 4/30/2021 11:27 AMWhen you live in the country, a basic understanding of agriculture is useful. Farming has played an important role in Pennsylvania's history and continues to contribute to your community today. Many of the qualities people enjoy about country living result directly from farming, including open space, aesthetic and pastoral views, and the rural way of life. Agriculture's contributions to your community include environmental, economic, and cultural benefits. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Research PeatlandsMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Cynthia Page 4/30/2021 11:26 AM- The Indonesian government has effectively rescinded protection for much of its carbon-rich peatlands by issuing a new regulation that limits protection to the area of a peatland ecosystem where the peat is the thickest.
