  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Buildings Learn about 'Green Gentrification'
Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?

    Olivia Nery's avatar
    Olivia Nery 5/02/2021 1:30 PM

Climate action plans should benefit all communities, not just the wealthy ones. Governments need to take the poverty stricken areas in consideration as well, especially so these communities can begin to thrive as a result of these plans, and make sure the cost to live in their homes isn’t changed because of climate action.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?

    Olivia Nery's avatar
    Olivia Nery 4/29/2021 9:29 AM
Since geothermal energy is so reliable and efficient, I think governments all over the world should begin to but more funds towards active geothermal plants, as this is a smart investment due to the geothermal energy’s abundance.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Olivia Nery's avatar
    Olivia Nery 4/28/2021 8:56 AM
Methane digesters are a huge step towards renewable energy. They transform waste like feces into clean, renewable energy. If we keep learning more about this renewable energy source, we are on the right path towards a clean future.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity Learn More about Biomass
Had you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!

    Olivia Nery's avatar
    Olivia Nery 4/27/2021 9:02 AM
I had never heard of biomass technology before this. Biomass technology is much better for the environment because if it is used correctly, it has no new carbon emissions. I learned that biomass technology is truly the path to a clean future.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Olivia Nery's avatar
    Olivia Nery 4/26/2021 9:17 AM
Peatlands are very important, as they store carbon and retain water to prevent droughts. We can protect them by not purchasing palm oil and choosing alternatives like avocado oil, coconut oil, etc. We can also research our paper materials we are purchasing and make sure we aren’t funding the destruction of peatlands.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 2
How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

    Olivia Nery's avatar
    Olivia Nery 4/20/2021 9:01 AM
The scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face have a big impact on my thinking and actions. Global warming and increased weather events have a negative impact on our temperate deciduous forests. We need to do everything to protect our forests from these changes in our environment.  Many of these changes are very overwhelming because we have no wat to know how much worse these changes to our ecosystems and forests will be. I feel hopeful since we are beginning to take action to protect our forests and plant more trees.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Olivia Nery's avatar
    Olivia Nery 4/19/2021 9:28 AM
My diet has a huge negative impact on deforestation. I need to be more mindful and aware of the food I am purchasing, and try not to purchase items with palm oil in them. I can instead purchase things without palm oil,or alternatives like avocado oil and coconut oil.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Olivia Nery's avatar
    Olivia Nery 4/15/2021 9:16 AM
Knowing differences between use by, sell by, and best by dates I will be more cautious in regards to wasting food, and instead of jumping to conclusions about the safety of the food, I will remember that many of these labels only address the “peak” quality and not the safety. Keeping these things in mind will reduce the amount of food I am wasting.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Olivia Nery's avatar
    Olivia Nery 4/12/2021 9:16 AM
Barriers that exist to women's equal participation and representation in my community include gender based violence, inequality job opportunities, lack of education on women's health, and underrepresentation in leadership.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Olivia Nery's avatar
    Olivia Nery 4/01/2021 11:00 AM

Family planning is necessary because it not only gains equity on gender equity, but also gains equity on lowering global warming. In places stricken with poverty, women do not have access to the right resources like contraceptives, and clean energy. In places with less poverty, women have access to more resources, yet women everywhere need more education on the subject of family planning.
