Transportation
Improve the MPG on my existing car.
Not everyone has the pocket book to purchase a new electric, hybrid or 40+ MPG vehicle. But you can still do your part to improve your current vehicle's MPG. Regular maintenance and replacement of a few key items will go a long way toward that goal. Click the LEARN button below to explore what you can do to get the most out of your tank of gas:
Transportation
Make it a Habit to Drive for better MPG
By far, the best recommendation to reduce your fuel consumption is to NOT drive your car. Opt to walk or bike when you can. When you have to drive, there are a few habits to be mindful of to reduce your fuel consumption. Avoiding bad driving habits like accelerating too quickly or late braking and using your cruise control more frequently can all improve MPG. To make things more interesting, keep track of your MPG with each tank fill-up and challenge yourself or compete with a friend to improve the results each time. Click below to LEARN more driving habits to reduce your fuel consumption.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate ResilienceHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Marlis Muschal 4/23/2021 4:45 PMIn terms of mental health, planting trees is a great reminder of the lasting impact each individual can have on their own environment. Physical health can be improved by the expansion of green spaces in one's community. The connection to that community through a planted tree can improve one's spiritual health. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Marlis Muschal 4/16/2021 11:31 AMThis information enables me to sort, prioritize, and save my perishable foods. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate ResilienceHow could better walking infrastructure make your city both more enjoyable and more equitable?
Marlis Muschal 4/16/2021 11:29 AMMy neighborhood association invites and welcomes participation from people in the community. During our monthly meetings, we've discussed adding and improving walking paths in our neighborhood. Connecting our neighborhood to city-wide walking infrastructure would make the city more enjoyable and accessible. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate ResilienceGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. What have you done in the past to support women-owned businesses? How can you better support communities by supporting women?
Marlis Muschal 4/16/2021 11:25 AMMy partner found a small, woman-owned business in the city we moved to, and we have supported her business ever since. I've bought her products to give as Christmas gifts and told friends about her store. We look forward to finding and supporting more woman-owned businesses in our community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationWhat are the factors that influence your choice of transportation? These can include things like money, time, and convenience, as well as perceptions of danger or safety. What would need to change for you to regularly choose more climate-friendly options?
Marlis Muschal 4/07/2021 1:05 PMTime and convenience are the major factors in my choice of transportation. I used public transit often when I lived in Portland, OR because light rail, street car, and bus options were close to where I lived and worked. Greenways also enabled me to bike to work. I now depend much more on my car, and my family has expanded to 2 vehicles, because the public transit options in Lawrence, KS are limited to a bus system, which does not offer an advantage in terms of time or convenience. More public transit and greenway options would definitely help me choose more climate-friendly transportations.
