Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Save Rigaud Mountain
Rigaud Mountain is an expansive natural resource that we rely upon to run many of our Outdoor Education courses, here at JAC. It is under extreme pressure from development and mismanagement, and in desperate need of protection. Facing COVID and the Climate Crisis, the need to protect our few remaining local intact forests, is more stronger than ever. We need them, for our health and wellness, and they are disappearing. If you are able, please support this important cause and take a few moments to forward this letter to others who understand its importance. The petition and funding pages are accessible through the "Learn More" button.
Action Track: Climate Resilience
Learn about 'Green Gentrification'
Multiple Solutions
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning about green gentrification and how it relates to city planning for climate action.
Transportation
Muscle Power on Earth Day
I will cut green house gas emissions related to my commute to John Abbott College on Earth day, April 22. I will only use muscle-powered transportation (walk, bike, skateboard) for my commute.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHow can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?
Adina Mendelzys 4/19/2021 5:28 AMIt's a matter of having those systems be as accessible as possible in terms of scheduling & frequency to make them a better option than single occupancy vehicles. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate ResilienceCities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?
Adina Mendelzys 4/13/2021 5:53 AMThe most important aspect will be to integrate any plans with the reality of the people who live in the area. Perhaps tax incentives could be offered to buildings that keep rents affordable for the current tenants. Everyone should have the right to live with access to green space and appropriate infrastructure. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Accelerating SolutionsAfter signing a local petition, how does it make you feel?
Adina Mendelzys 4/12/2021 5:27 AMLocal petitions can make a difference - I have seen it in action in my area! We have to use our voices to draw attention to these issues or nothing will prevent practices that are damaging our areas of natural beauty and threatening the wildlife. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationReducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?
Adina Mendelzys 4/09/2021 10:31 AMUnfortunately electric cars still need to be more economically viable up front before this can be an option. -
Adina Mendelzys 4/08/2021 12:13 PMI was ready with gloves and garbage bag to clean up nearby bus stops and was gratified to discover that none of them needed me! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Adina Mendelzys 4/07/2021 10:37 AMA truly sustainable community would need to incorporate local resources for energy and food consumption needs. We are currently dependent on so much of what we need and use in our daily lives coming from outside of our communities, necessitating all of the baggage that comes with the transportation industry. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksAre bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?
Adina Mendelzys 4/06/2021 8:23 AMWe use bamboo drinking cups & have bamboo sheets on our beds - there is quite a bit of selection if you do your research! Many of the local shops offer bamboo products and the more I learn about bamboo, the more impressive it is! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Adina Mendelzys 4/05/2021 1:25 PMKnowing that the "best by" label does not mean that food is no longer consumable changes how I will look at any unopened packages in the kitchen. In the past I would get rid of things based on those dates without even verifying the state of them - now I will always check first!
