Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 60 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Action Track: Climate Resilience
Plant Trees
Temperate Forest Restoration
I will plant 1 tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Keep Track of Wasted Food
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Earth Month Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.
Electricity
Calculate My Carbon Footprint
All Drawdown Solutions
I will calculate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce my negative impact on the environment.
Industry
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.

Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Farm Irrigation Efficiency
I will prevent water runoff and increase absorbency by mulching the base of trees and plants in my yard.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Talia Manning 4/07/2021 12:48 PMEven just spending lots of time in my yard -- gardening, playing with my son, pruning trees -- I find new things each day; I hear new bird songs and favorite bird songs; I've started learning to identify the native plants versus the invasives...and I am working hard to cull out the invasives as much as I can. The number of little creepy crawlies in a shovel-full of dirt never ceases to amaze me. I feel more grounded in my home and my little pocket of the world the more time I spend exploring, repairing, and tending to the small plot of land that I own. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate ResilienceHave you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.
Talia Manning 4/07/2021 12:44 PMA bear visiting my yard while tending my garden! It was very humbling, and I was awed by both the strength and the beauty of the visitor (though I first made sure to get myself and my young son safely out of her way). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseProducing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?
Talia Manning 4/05/2021 1:59 PMAll of the above, but mostly I just love having less to throw away in the trash (and less smelly trash), which is a constant reminder of doing something good for the world. Our new vermicompost system (check out #subpod!!) is set up and awesome, and we're excited to welcome 2000 new members of the family as soon as they arrive!
