  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

Even just spending lots of time in my yard -- gardening, playing with my son, pruning trees -- I find new things each day; I hear new bird songs and favorite bird songs; I've started learning to identify the native plants versus the invasives...and I am working hard to cull out the invasives as much as I can.  The number of little creepy crawlies in a shovel-full of dirt never ceases to amaze me.  I feel more grounded in my home and my little pocket of the world the more time I spend exploring, repairing, and tending to the small plot of land that I own.

A bear visiting my yard while tending my garden! It was very humbling, and I was awed by both the strength and the beauty of the visitor (though I first made sure to get myself and my young son safely out of her way).

    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Producing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?

All of the above, but mostly I just love having less to throw away in the trash (and less smelly trash), which is a constant reminder of doing something good for the world. Our new vermicompost system (check out #subpod!!) is set up and awesome, and we're excited to welcome 2000 new members of the family as soon as they arrive!
