Muscle Power on Earth Day
I will cut green house gas emissions related to my commute to John Abbott College on Earth day, April 22. I will only use muscle-powered transportation (walk, bike, skateboard) for my commute.
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Save Rigaud Mountain
Rigaud Mountain is an expansive natural resource that we rely upon to run many of our Outdoor Education courses, here at JAC. It is under extreme pressure from development and mismanagement, and in desperate need of protection. Facing COVID and the Climate Crisis, the need to protect our few remaining local intact forests, is more stronger than ever. We need them, for our health and wellness, and they are disappearing. If you are able, please support this important cause and take a few moments to forward this letter to others who understand its importance. The petition and funding pages are accessible through the "Learn More" button.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 3 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Accelerating Solutions Save Rigaud MountainAfter signing a local petition, how does it make you feel?
Kate Little 4/11/2021 1:37 PMsigning a local petition makes me feel like I'm a part of my community and also scales in on how communities pave the way for greater collective change. its comforting to know that there are more people, not that far from where I live that care about the environment -
Kate Little 4/10/2021 8:05 AMif you have a minute to spare today please sign this petition to ban single-use plastic packaging in your local grocery store! http://chng.it/m4hBTTcVd4

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Kate Little 4/06/2021 10:34 AMI think people in richer countries eat more meat because they don’t view it as a commodity. Meat comes sealed on a styrofoam platter. We don’t think about the resources needed to stock the meat displays in our grocery stores and thus many don’t think twice about it. Meat, especially red meat, is proven to increase blood pressure and create heart issues. Not only can meat be destructive for our health but also for our planet as animal agriculture is one of the leading contributors to fossil fuel emissions in the atmosphere - arguably more so than transportation. If we stop eating meat we solve many of our environmental issues like biodiversity, deforestation, carbon/methane emissions etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Advocate For More Packaging OptionsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Kate Little 4/02/2021 10:47 AMWhat concerns me the most about how humans are negatively affecting the planet is that we’re completely aware of it. We know what needs to be done to combat climate change yet people continue to do the opposite. I know change does not happen over night but the climate crisis is not new news in anyway. The fact that we have the means to do what is needed and the ones in power are still hesitant to make change. Maybe it’s naive to think in such a way but I happen to want to keep living on our planet...-
Melissa Tomecz 4/02/2021 5:10 PMI totally agree, Kate! The ones who want to continue making money do not want to let go of their profits. They are too lazy to look into other ways of creating profit because they know they just might (God forbid), lose some money at the beginning. They refuse to see the bigger (and better) picture.
