REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn about Temperate ForestsAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
Jenny Li 4/30/2021 6:06 PMThat paying attention to my daily actions and how they impact the environment cannot just be a one-time thing or part of a challenge. It must be something that I -- and we -- continuously work towards every day! It feels overwhelming that there are so many places to start, but it gives me hope that because there are so many actions we can take, there's bound to be something for everyone. Also, seeing everyone's participation in this challenge brings me hope! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Local Perennial BiomassClimate scientist Katharine Hayhoe states that "The reason we care about climate change is because it affects the people and places that we care about." What is happening (or will happen) in your area that will affect the people and places you care about?
Jenny Li 4/30/2021 12:40 PMI love this question! Climate change has increased flooding in DC -- sea levels in the DC region rises 2x as fast than the global average. If the sea level continues to rise, it could impact federal buildings and the National Mall area. Also, climate change has caused temperatures in DC to increase -- it's not uncommon for our mayor to issue "heat emergency" warnings in the summer. All of these factors could affect DC's tourism industry. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Research the Climate Impact of RefrigerantsWhat did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?
Jenny Li 4/30/2021 12:35 PMThis was interesting to learn about since it's a relatively new topic to me! I learned that HFCs have up to 9,000x greater capacity to warm the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. Also, I learned that effective disposal of refrigerants is key -- they can be purified for reuse or transformed into other chemicals that do not cause warming. So, managing the disposal of these chemicals can reduce emissions! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Properly Dispose of RefrigerantsHow do you address your own feelings of concern, fear or despair about climate change?
Jenny Li 4/30/2021 12:32 PMSince moving home, I've tried to encourage my parents to turn off the TV when no one is really watching it vs. keeping it on as "background noise" and also telling my mom to place online orders from one store all at once vs. separate orders (so the store can combine/reduce boxes). But I try to control what I can, like walking/running to places and bringing reusable bags to the farmers market! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Connect With A NonprofitWhat are the most pressing issues for women, girls, and trans/nonbinary people in your community?
Jenny Li 4/30/2021 12:29 PMSo many... including lack of access to reproductive health care, domestic violence, sexual abuse, and homelessness -- particularly for BIPOC individuals. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Research Heat PumpsWhy is taking action on climate change important to you? Why do you care?
Jenny Li 4/30/2021 10:26 AMBecause I care about animals like turtles and polar bears! And want to make sure they are able to have sustainable habitats. We still have time limit the worst impact by looking critically at our daily activities and changing them -- I want to build a sustainable world not just for our generation, but future ones too :) -
REFLECTION QUESTION

REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Learn about the Legacy of RedliningHow does city planning and design relate to equity and climate change?
Jenny Li 4/30/2021 10:11 AMThough redlining (aka racial discrimination in mortgage lending) was banned 50+ years ago, the polices have had long-last effects on cities' residential patterns and economic conditions in various neighborhoods. For example, a recent study found that formerly redlined neighborhoods are today 5 degrees hotter in summer and these neighborhoods also remain lower-income, and have fewer trees/parks to help cool the air and more paved surfaces that absorb and radiate heat. Would definitely recommend reading how historic housing policies have impacted the urban landscape to this day! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Spread the Word about Energy AlternativesWhat inspiration and wisdom can you gather from your family, faith, or community traditions that would help you in both communicating about and addressing our most pressing energy issues?
Jenny Li 4/30/2021 9:49 AMGrowing up in DC, peaceful protests were very common to communicate positions on issues! Recently, I've also witnessed the power of social media in engaging audiences near and far :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Advocate for Solar InstallationHow does advocating for rooftop solar connect to your values? How might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the shift to clean energy?
Jenny Li 4/30/2021 9:43 AMI'm all about efficiency and trying to kill two birds with one stone! Solar panels seem like a no-brainer when it comes to the environment, but can also be more expensive. By advocating for rooftop solar panels, I'm not only reducing greenhouse gas pollution, but also possibly saving money on electric bills. Also, as more people who adopt solar panels, the more the price drops (apparently the cost of solar has plummeted 73% since 2006). I could definitely bring this up to my close family and friends to incentivize them to shift to clean energy.
