  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transportation Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

    Eloise Lang's avatar
    Eloise Lang 4/30/2021 3:15 PM
Going on daily walks has reminded me of the benefits the sun and fresh air provide for our health.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Climate Resilience Support Local Food Systems
Dependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?

    Eloise Lang's avatar
    Eloise Lang 4/30/2021 3:13 PM
Supporting local businesses has many benefits over bigger companies. I love  buying from local farms/stores because the people who run them are focused on sustainable and ethical practices for both humans, animals and the planet. Without support from the public, many small businesses and farms would not be able to operate and would not be able to share their products, information, and experience with the community.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?

    Eloise Lang's avatar
    Eloise Lang 4/30/2021 3:10 PM
Public investment is important, but after researching more about federal spending, I feel that it would be more efficient to defund areas of expenditure such as the military and the police, and direct that money towards greener infrastructure.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Eloise Lang's avatar
    Eloise Lang 4/28/2021 3:54 PM
My vision of a sustainable community is one where there is no unnecessary waste and everything produced can have a positive impact on the earth. What needs to change in order to achieve that is a change in attitude. Many, including myself, don’t respect the planet as much as we should so by realizing how much nature provides is essential to making future decisions.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity Learn More about Biomass
Had you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!

    Eloise Lang's avatar
    Eloise Lang 4/27/2021 10:17 AM
Biomass has the potential to replace fossil fuels, eliminating their production of greenhouse gases. An interesting fact is that biomass can reduce dependence on foreign oil since biofuels are the only renewable liquid transportation fuels available.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Bioplastics
What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

    Eloise Lang's avatar
    Eloise Lang 4/22/2021 8:47 AM
I’m most concerned with the irreversible ways humans are affecting the earth. While many problems can be solved with more attention and dedication, some such as the breaking down of plastics are harder to combat.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn about Temperate Forests
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

    Eloise Lang's avatar
    Eloise Lang 4/20/2021 8:59 AM
Now that I’m learning about the causes and why we’re facing such dire consequences, I am feeling very motivated to do whatever I can to help. The parts that feel overwhelming are the cultural elements of everyday life that are so ingrained, like driving and buying clothes from fast fashion that make it hard to have hope since most people do those things. I’m hopeful though because people are becoming more and more invested in the environmental impact of food and many companies are working to reduce carbon output.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Eloise Lang's avatar
    Eloise Lang 4/19/2021 5:55 PM
Currently my diet still contributes to deforestation, especially through the use of palm oil, coffee and cocoa. As someone who eats a plant based diet, I think it’s important to remember that not only animal products, while a big culprit, are not the sole reason for forest degradation. To make a positive difference, I will limit processed foods since most are manufactured with palm oil and are often grown/harvested unsustainably and prioritize fresh, local foods from smaller farms.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Eloise Lang's avatar
    Eloise Lang 4/16/2021 12:43 PM
I’ve never heard of the term before but it reminds me a lot of permaculture where each component benefits another. I think the biggest advantage is that it creates stronger ecosystems unlike factory farms that work against nature in general. Another advantage that I think is just as important is the treatment of animals. They have access to fresh grass and the sun in uncrowded pasture which is the least humans can do before harvesting them.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Eloise Lang's avatar
    Eloise Lang 4/15/2021 9:19 AM
I will be able to prevent major food wastes by keeping food around longer rather than throwing it out as soon as the date says so.
