ProximaCc's actions
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Industry
Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
Refrigerant Management
I will spend 25 minute(s) learning about the climate impact of refrigerants and what climate-friendly refrigerants are by using the links below.
Industry
Share Bioplastic Disposal Tips
Bioplastics
I will spend at least 20 minutes researching how to properly dispose of bioplastics in my city and share this information with 5 friends, family and/or colleagues.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 3 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Learn about Biochar
Biochar Production
I will spend 25 minute(s) learning about biochar and how it can help sequester carbon.
Land Sinks
Research Peatlands
Peatland Protection and Rewetting
I will spend 30 minutes researching the environmental benefits of peatlands and what is being done around the world to conserve and restore them.
Industry
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Land Sinks
Forest-Friendly Foods 2
Tropical Forest Restoration
I will replace or remove from my current diet the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products that are known to contribute to deforestation.
Buildings
Learn about 'Green Gentrification'
Multiple Solutions
I will spend at least 25 minutes learning about green gentrification and how it relates to city planning for climate action.
Electricity
Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
Methane Digesters
I will watch a video about methane digesters (also commonly known as anaerobic digesters).
Transportation
Stay on the Ground
Telepresence, High-Speed Rail
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Transportation
Explore Other Transportation Solutions
All Transportation Solutions
I will spend at least 20 minutes researching other Drawdown Transportation Solutions.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationWhat did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?
ProximaCc ProximaCc 4/30/2021 2:29 PMPublic transportation in the form of trains and railways can have benefits beyond the environment (ex. traffic). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
ProximaCc ProximaCc 4/30/2021 2:24 PMI'm most concerned about society's focus on more products, money, and status. We need to be more mindful, supportive, and focused on making the world a better place than when we found it so it can make our lives better overall. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
ProximaCc ProximaCc 4/30/2021 2:22 PMA sustainable community would have a circular economy, basically a lot of cycles that turn a material into a product, which is used, disposed, and turned back into that material. This would be a transition from a linear economy. Here's an example of a linear economy: we make plastic from oil, plants, and natural gas. We use them in countless products like plastic cups. Once we dispose the plastic it makes its way into a landfill, where it will take thousands to millions of years to degrade. Ways we can make a sustainable community is to have a circular economy, use perfect substitutes of the products that benefit us but hurt the Earth, and not have a societal focus on what we don't have, but what we already do have. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildingsCities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?
ProximaCc ProximaCc 4/30/2021 2:09 PMFocus on the practical aspects that protect poorer communities without attracting wealthier people, which would drive out the poor communities and cause an economic collapse to the area. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered SinksCan biochar provide additional benefits besides sequestering carbon?
ProximaCc ProximaCc 4/29/2021 6:17 PMBiochar can make soil more porous and loose (allowing water to enter and enhancing soil structure), decrease nitrous oxide emissions and acidity, and increase electrical conductivity. -
ProximaCc ProximaCc 4/29/2021 6:10 PMThe last day is tomorrow! Congratulations for participating in this event! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?
ProximaCc ProximaCc 4/29/2021 6:09 PMI learned that refrigerants like isobutane have a global warming potential of 3, compared to common HFCs that typically have global warming potentials of around 1,400. Isobutane or R-600 has a very high energy efficiency, reducing electric costs. ALDI, Whole Foods, and Target have transitioned to using less HFCs while Trader Joes, Costco, and Wegmans have made no or barely any transition. -
ProximaCc ProximaCc 4/26/2021 8:59 PMOver 6,000 points! Great job! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
ProximaCc ProximaCc 4/24/2021 5:49 PMI tried to not give the 7-hour a big deal. The best way that I've found is to leave in the morning to avoid traffic, allowing you to get to your destination sooner. -
ProximaCc ProximaCc 4/22/2021 2:14 PMHappy Earth Day everyone! Let’s continue pushing! We are entering the final stretch!
