    Industry Research Cement Alternatives
Concrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but its carbon footprint may not be obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?

This cement that cleans pollutions (like CO2) from the air and offers health benefits too is absolutely amazing!!!! I have really enjoyed learning about this pollution-eating cement and the other cool new inventions like biochar and silvopasture. After learning about these, I finally feel like there is hope for the future and there is evidence that we are living in a time where we can use technology to make a huge positive impact, rather than how it has seemed--like we are only making negative impacts with all our knowledge (fracking, etc). I'm so glad I took this class and chose these three topics to study for the echochallenge:drawdown!!!

How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

I don't normally spend a lot of time outdoors because of my work and school schedule, but I went to the beach, and it was amazing!!! I spend over three hours out in nature and it really helps to re-connect you with what is important in life. It helps you see that you fit into this place called earth and that the beauty has been given to us to enjoy and enrich our lives and experiences!!!

Action Track: Accelerating Solutions Support Companies Leading in Green Energy
Every dollar you put into solar or wind is a dollar not put into traditional financial institutions. You'll also be bolstering the fossil fuel divestment movement, too. Name some companies you know that invest in green energy. How can you support them?

    Pamela Jones's avatar
    Pamela Jones 4/26/2021 11:45 AM
Starbucks, Netflix, Walmart, Target, Apple, HP, Google, Bank of America, Federal Express, and UPS are a few of the major companies that invest or us green energy. I support them by purchasing products from them, or using their services :)

Have you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.

Yes, one day I got some sad news so I was feeling down and I went outside to a treed area and sat on the ground. After looking down for quite some time, I looked up and the sight of the sun shining through the trees was so beautiful--I had only seen sights like this in pictures--I immediately began to feel hope rise up in me... I will never forget that day. The earth and all that it holds are blessed gifts to us all!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Climate Resilience Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Pamela Jones's avatar
    Pamela Jones 4/24/2021 10:54 AM
I loved learning about Silvopasturing! This is such a great concept and I hope that more farmers catch on to how much this can help their animals thrive along with their crops and the forest (if not over done). It make so much sense that the cattle are loving this, and it shows in how they gain weight in the heat of the summer, while normally they would loose weight being out under the hot sun 100% of the time. I wish I had land so I could start to do this too! I am currently looking though :)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Pamela Jones's avatar
    Pamela Jones 4/15/2021 2:46 PM
I think this is because meat costs more to bring to the table. Eating meat is not a prime way to get the vitamins and minerals that we need. It affects us, people around us, and our planet because of the C02 that is emitted when raising the meat sources.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Learn about Biochar
Can biochar provide additional benefits besides sequestering carbon?

    Pamela Jones's avatar
    Pamela Jones 4/09/2021 6:48 PM
Yes, it is wonderful for plants and makes them grow faster. This can also help with the climate while growing more food.

I'm not sure... I will look for other opportunities, but I'm excited that this will help and it will also save me a lot of money on my electricity bill from now on!!!

What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Pamela Jones 4/05/2021 8:23 PM
This video showed how one college is using cow manure to create green energy and much less methane is released into the atmosphere that otherwise would have. This is an ingenious idea!
