Health and Education
Help Students Overcome Health Barriers
Health and Education
I will donate 2 Femme Kit(s) to help people who menstruate overcome health and sanitation barriers to being able to attend school.
Industry
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Industry
Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
Refrigerant Management
I will spend 20 minute(s) learning about the climate impact of refrigerants and what climate-friendly refrigerants are by using the links below.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Industry
Find a Local Climate-Friendly Supermarket
Refrigerant Management
I will explore the interactive map in the links below to find a supermarket that does not use HFC refrigerants near my home.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 45 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Advocate For More Packaging Options
Multiple Industry Solutions
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Spread the Word about Energy Alternatives
All Electricity Solutions
I will research and tell 2 people each day about the benefits of alternative energy sources like wind turbines, solar energy, geothermal energy, and methane digesters.
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Support Local Food Systems
Plant-Rich Diets
I will source 50 percent of my food from local producers each day. This could include signing up for a local CSA, buying from a farmer's market, visiting a food co-op, foraging with a local group, or growing my own ingredients.
Transportation
Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle
Electric Cars, Hybrid Cars
I will spend at least 45 minutes researching and weighing my options to see if a hybrid or electric vehicle makes sense for my lifestyle.
Industry
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bioplastics
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and BIPOC-majority neighborhoods. I will avoid buying and using 6 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.
Industry
Go Paperless
Recycled Paper
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.

REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Accelerating SolutionsDependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?
Jessica Jones 4/19/2021 7:25 PMI went to the farmer's market and got fresh produce and honey. I also got an Mt Hood strawberry plant to grow this summer. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Jessica Jones 4/19/2021 7:19 PMI use my hydro flask every single day. I have a water and coffee bottle with me at all times. I never use plastic bags, at using a compostable bag for my produce, and I use reusable bags, which some are plastic, but I like to buy canvas. My problem is food containers, like sour cream, or frozen broccoli. I know I can freeze my own broccoli, but it's not always as convenient. I already feel about this. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationReducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?
Jessica Jones 4/14/2021 9:50 PMMy goal is to switch to an electric vehicle in the next 3 years. I also plan to purchase a home in the next 5 years, I will be investing in solar panels when possible, but it will be a priority. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat do you want to prioritize over material 'stuff' in your own life?
Jessica Jones 4/12/2021 9:07 AMI am very excited to say that I signed up to never receive credit card mail ever again. I also have paperless billing and have canceled all marketing catalogs. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
Jessica Jones 4/12/2021 9:02 AMI reuse jars and containers. I use hydro flasks for water and coffee/tea. I would like to not buy frozen vegetables in plastic bags, but they are so convenient. I do buy fresh and freeze myself, however, This is where most of my plastic comes from. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Jessica Jones 4/06/2021 12:31 PMBeautiful day! I am noticing all the tulips popping up. Neighbors are getting their yards looking good. However, the ever-growing garbage piles around the city and the neighborhoods are growing and I feel like I can only do so much. which is not enough.
