REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and EducationWhat did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?
Mariah Johnson 5/01/2021 1:35 AMI think it's crucial that sex education is taught in the U.S. on a federal level. So it's the same information everywhere. Some people truly never get the education which causes unwanted pregnancies, STI's, intimate partner violence and injury. It's crucial that there is a national consensus on sex education. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and EducationWhen family planning focuses on healthcare provision and meeting the expressed needs of women, it results in empowerment, equality, and well-being, and the benefits to the planet are side effects. Why is family planning an important civil rights consideration?
Mariah Johnson 5/01/2021 1:31 AMBecause being forced to have a child when you don't want to is against your bodily autonomy. If it's not okay to do forced sterilization it's certainly not okay to have forced pregnancy and birth. The option for a person to decide when and if they're ready is up to the individual and not the government. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Mariah Johnson 5/01/2021 1:26 AMBecause the livestock business is an expensive and pollutes a lot, It contributes large scale to climate change and meat can be bad for your health if you over do it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseClean air, clean water and healthy food are just three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. What are some other reasons? How could/does regenerative agriculture positively impact you and your community?
Mariah Johnson 5/01/2021 1:23 AMIt has a large focus on keeping the soil healthy and be able to be used for a long time which benefits the community that it serves. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityHad you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!
Mariah Johnson 5/01/2021 1:17 AMI learned about it last term in the other environmental science class I took but not in depth. I think it's rad that it could be a replacement for fossil fuels, potentially. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Mariah Johnson 5/01/2021 1:09 AMBecause you'll know when the product is at best flavor, how fresh it is and when it shouldn't be used. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Mariah Johnson 4/26/2021 8:11 PMI think a sustainable community looks like a healthy environment and booming economy. A lot would have to change, we'd have to be intentional with all our actions and help each other. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?
Mariah Johnson 4/23/2021 12:32 AMI changed out the rest of the lightbulbs in my house to LED's! I think it was 8 that were left and 2 that cannot be because my property management company says they can't be changed. I've been being a lot more conscious of unplugging things i'm not using and turning lights off when I exit a room. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseWhile dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?
Mariah Johnson 4/22/2021 7:37 PMSometimes you also can eat more than you need if you fill up your plate. You can always add more, if you want it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate ResilienceCities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?
Mariah Johnson 4/22/2021 7:32 PMWe need to have effective housing policies that prevents people from being displaced when their neighborhood gets amenities like flood preventions and parks.
