Being in Maui really allowed me to slow down and enjoy the outside and beauty of the world
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

    Katherine Hopkins's avatar
    Katherine Hopkins 4/17/2021 12:35 PM
It adds extra steps but soon it will be a habit and I won't have to think about what I can reuse or recycle I will just know.  Repurposing is actually fun to do, finding new and creative ways to use things rather than dispose of them.  Old Closet by fold doors are being turned into an outdoor vertical garden and old bike tires are being turned into new perches for our chickens for example
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Choose Recycled Paper
Good job on choosing recycled paper! How can you take your action a step further?

Continued to find other products I can purchase that are made from recycled materials.  https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/50227/13-products-made-using-recycled-materials
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Composting
Producing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?

    Katherine Hopkins's avatar
    Katherine Hopkins 4/14/2021 2:55 PM
The impact on water and land has a larger global impact just not on the environment but also ofter in areas that already suffer from drought or access to clean water.  It is important to be thoughtful in your own consumption and impact if throwing it away into trash bags that go into a landfill versus using it to nourish a garden
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Fund Family Planning
When family planning focuses on healthcare provision and meeting the expressed needs of women, it results in empowerment, equality, and well-being, and the benefits to the planet are side effects. Why is family planning an important civil rights consideration?

    Katherine Hopkins's avatar
    Katherine Hopkins 4/13/2021 3:04 PM
it is because it is usually underserved communities of color that have the least access to affordable healthcare.  Also, LBGTQ often struggle to get the care and treatment they need
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

Turning lights off, keeping the house a steady temperature, allowing the temp in the house to be a couple degrees warmer or cooler based on the season, and turning down my hot tub when not in use
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Katherine Hopkins's avatar
    Katherine Hopkins 4/12/2021 8:47 PM
Access to healthcare is limited to underserved communities as well as resources for family planning.  That is why the work Planned Parenthood does is so important.  They provide birth control to empower women to make their choice to decide when or if they are ready to start a family.  They also provided important health exams and cancer screenings that many women would not have access to otherwise.   Allowing more control a woman has over her body and choices in reproduction allows for women to choose to have fewer children or none at all and make the choice for when the time is right for her.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Connect With A Nonprofit
What are the most pressing issues for women, girls, and trans/nonbinary people in your community?

    Katherine Hopkins's avatar
    Katherine Hopkins 4/10/2021 4:12 PM
After working at Planned Parenthood for 3 years honestly, it's a long list.  Equity, being safe, control of their own bodies and identities.  Access to affordable care and support.  Continuing to be a political pawn/topic and having old white men decide on what you can do with your own body or whether you can compete in sports or even use a restroom which matches you gender identity
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Katherine Hopkins's avatar
    Katherine Hopkins 4/10/2021 4:06 PM
In order to have ample amounts of meat for the masses, you need water and land - not only land that can provide space but that can provide nurishment which needs water.  Many countries do not have the infrastructure for real irrigation let alone drinking water.  There a many books and articles out about water scarcity and its effect as a human right.  The consumption of meat at the level it is has a global impact due to deforestation, increased pollution, and contributes to food waste.  Not to mention the effect of animal cruelty in most mass production plants
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Practice the 5 R's
What are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?

    Katherine Hopkins's avatar
    Katherine Hopkins 4/09/2021 12:22 PM
Research - more ways to practice the 5 Rs
Replant - seeds from fruits and vegetables into a garden
Repetition - repeat these good practices until they become good habits
