Roger's actions
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Save Rigaud Mountain
Rigaud Mountain is an expansive natural resource that we rely upon to run many of our Outdoor Education courses, here at JAC. It is under extreme pressure from development and mismanagement, and in desperate need of protection. Facing COVID and the Climate Crisis, the need to protect our few remaining local intact forests, is more stronger than ever. We need them, for our health and wellness, and they are disappearing. If you are able, please support this important cause and take a few moments to forward this letter to others who understand its importance. The petition and funding pages are accessible through the "Learn More" button.

Communicate With My Elected Officials
Onshore Wind Turbines, Offshore Wind Turbines

Electricity
Support Companies Leading in Green Energy
Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaics, Distributed Solar Photovoltaics
I will use my spending power to reward companies leading in creating or purchasing green energy and incentivize others to invest more in green energy.
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Contact your Elected Officials
Abandoned Farmland Restoration
I will contact 3 elected officials to voice my opinion on the importance of restoring farmland in my region, including both public and private land.

All Drawdown Solutions
I will calculate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce my negative impact on the environment.

Action Track: Climate Resilience

Roger Haughey 4/30/2021 10:24 AMGot a little late start, but loving the reflective aspect of it. GO JAC! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationDid you have any obstacles getting to and from campus with your "muscle transportation" of choice?
Roger Haughey 4/30/2021 10:23 AMsome of the bike paths between NDG and Sainte-Anne take you out of the way, so I had to decide to go bike path all the way or take some roads as well. Also, I had to plan extra time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHow has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Roger Haughey 4/30/2021 10:20 AMWhere I grew up we had no public transportation, so I always thought it was an exotic thing. Once I moved to Montreal, I discovered an excellent system and it was easy to plug into it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHow does using human-powered transportation make you feel compared to using other methods of transportation?
Roger Haughey 4/29/2021 11:33 AMPowerful - you can go pretty fast on a bike and it is a great feeling to really move on an uncrowded bike path. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Roger Haughey 4/29/2021 11:32 AMHow loud the city is, night and day. It is a far cry from nature, where there is no low-level hum at all hours. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate ResilienceHave you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.
Roger Haughey 4/29/2021 11:30 AMPicking wild fiddleheads with an old friend really helped me to connect with them and with the outdoors. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Roger Haughey 4/29/2021 11:29 AMI already walk around the community, but the switch to more train commuting has been interesting. There are fewer folks on board, but all smiles behind the masks. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityWhat stood out to you most about your carbon footprint? What surprised you or sparked curiosity? Where can you take most immediate action?
Roger Haughey 4/29/2021 11:27 AMThe impact of buying fruit and vegetables imported from the Global South on my footprint was surprising. It will be hard to cut down on these healthy items, but I will try and buy local in season and try my hand at freezing and canning (mason jars) to cut down on the impact. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityEvery dollar you put into solar or wind is a dollar not put into traditional financial institutions. You'll also be bolstering the fossil fuel divestment movement, too. Name some companies you know that invest in green energy. How can you support them?
Roger Haughey 4/29/2021 11:25 AMOther than CanadaSolar, I don't know of any companies by name, but I am looking into Quebec based companies so I can invest in them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?
