REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Research Barriers to Participation and RepresentationWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
June Hament 4/30/2021 9:13 PMVery concerned about what will happen to the advances women have made in Afganistan after the US pulls out. It's the right thing to do but how can we support the women and girls to maintain the small amount of rights they have gained? -
June Hament 4/30/2021 8:43 PMThank you everyone, and most especially thank you to our team Green Jersey! Hope you had fun while learning some new ways to keep our state and planet green! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Research Cement AlternativesConcrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but its carbon footprint may not be obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?
June Hament 4/30/2021 8:39 PMHere is an article from Scientific American: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/low-carbon-cement-can-help-combat-climate-change/
If cement production were a country, it would be the third-largest emitter after China and the U.S! There are lots of new technologies being developed to reduce carbon released during production or to actually sequester carbon.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
June Hament 4/30/2021 8:11 PMUp until the time of colonization of America, eating meat was considered the privilege of the elite. With the abundance of wildlife free for the taking, grain to feed domesticated animals and wide open spaces that didn't belong to anyone (except the natives!), meat became widely available. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Support Nutrient ManagementHow does environmental quality influence your sense of community?
June Hament 4/30/2021 7:58 PMI have been advocating for our Congressional leaders to sign on to the Environmental Justice for All Act which has been introduced for several years. It now has a good chance to passing. Please contact your Senators and Congress people to ask them to support this bill.https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/senate-bill/872 -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Research the Climate Impact of RefrigerantsWhat did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?
June Hament 4/30/2021 7:46 PMAccording to a Washington Post article (https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2021/02/15/these-gases-your-grocerys-freezer-are-fueling-climate-change-biden-wants-fix-that/) from Feb 2021, grocery stores lose 25% of their refrigerants each year. HFC emissions in the United States rose by 4 million metric tons between 2018 and 2019. The 38,000 supermarkets in the United States use thousands of pounds of HFCs each year, according to the EPA, with each store having the equivalent climate impact of 300 cars on the road. Taken together, it is equal to 49 billion pounds of coal being burned each year. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Explore Other Food, Agriculture, and Land Use SolutionsWhat did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?
June Hament 4/30/2021 7:29 PMI learned about the administrative regulations on installation of New Jersey Solar Energy Generation on Preserved Farmlands in the state. There are many informative articles on this site, which you can search by state: https://farmlandinfo.org/state/new-jersey/ -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Give a MicroloanGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. Why do you think that is?
June Hament 4/30/2021 7:25 PMKiva.org makes microloans to people around the world who have no access to banks or credit to develop farms or very small businesses. Many women small holders borrow $300-1000 to buy seed or fertilizer to sustain crops on their small farms and to send their children to school. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Accelerating Solutions Support Businesses Owned by Women, BIPOC, or ImmigrantsGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. What have you done in the past to support women-owned businesses? How can you better support communities by supporting women?
June Hament 4/30/2021 7:17 PMI made a donation to Grameen America. Grameen is at the frontline of poverty alleviation in the United States, providing access to capital, training, and support to low-income women entrepreneurs to start or expand their small businesses. https://www.grameenamerica.org -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Practice the 5 R'sWhat are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
