Electricity
Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal Power
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of geothermal energy and consider investing in this technology.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Tend A Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Electricity
Learn More about Biomass
Biomass Power
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of biomass.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
Reduced Food Waste
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Land Sinks
Support a Community Garden
Multiple Solutions
I will support a community garden by volunteering, donating, or advocating for a new or existing one.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Farm Irrigation Efficiency
I will prevent water runoff and increase absorbency by mulching the base of trees and plants in my yard.
Land Sinks
Plant Trees
Temperate Forest Restoration
I will plant 3 tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Composting
Composting, Reduced Food Waste
I will start a compost bin where I live.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 30 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Composting with black soldier grubs
Learn about NC's native Diptera that has one of the widest digestive enzyme profiles, allowing for digestion of virtually all human food waste in one to two days: pre-and post-consumer; cooked, raw, or spoiled. Sign up for this workshop and discuss with your team members:
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Participate in one of the NCMNS Earth Day programs on April 22nd.
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences has prepared an Earth Week event starting from April 20th to April 25th. To celebrate Earth Day, participate in 1 program on April 22nd and write a short reflection in your feed.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 1 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Industry
Choose Recycled Paper
Recycled Paper
I will plan ahead to only use paper products made from post-consumer recycled paper for my home or office.
Industry
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bioplastics
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and BIPOC-majority neighborhoods. I will avoid buying and using 2 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Industry
Go Paperless
Recycled Paper
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Industry
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
Multiple Industry Solutions
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 30 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Transportation
Advocate for Greener vehicles at Federal Level
The US Postal Service is requesting 10's of 1000's of new vehicles to replace the fleet. There is a petition requesting that they focus on electric or hybrid vehicles. I have written a letter in support of the petition to "go electric".
Electricity
Hang Laundry Outside to Dry
I will hand one load of laundry a week outside to dry instead of using the dryer.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseHave you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.
John Gerwin 4/30/2021 1:43 PMI do some volunteer work for Raleigh Parks. I work with some neighbors in garden club we formed, to focus on native plants. After we spent a few seasons on our Powell Park plot, we took on another plot of land over at what is called Jackson Park. It's an undeveloped 4+ acres deeded to Raleigh Parks specifically to be left "undeveloped" for 99 years. We put in another native plant garden. It's been quite satisfying to see the many plants in bloom during the spring/summer, and then set seed. And then all the fine/fun critters that show up - the many pollinators, things that want to eat a pollinator, etc. Small plots of land but huge "ROI" with all the plants we've put in. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseWhat program did you choose and why?
John Gerwin 4/02/2021 5:27 PMHere's something to reflect on.... yours truly is giving a program for the Museum's Earth Day series! ha ha. And, I'm doing it on my birthday, April 21. Be sure to check it out. A bit about my many many days helping folks on sustainable coffee farms / ecolodges in northern Nicaragua (for ecotourism and wildlife management), and doing a little bird work to boot. If my banner image shows up, that's one of the sunsets from the main farm where I spent many a month...... until recently when the politics tanked... : (
