Switch your Search Engine

Ecosia is a search engine with servers that run on 200% renewable energy, plants a tree for every ~45 searches made, and does not sell your data to 3rd parties. See ecosia.org for more information and how to set your search engine default to Ecosia

Make it a Habit to Drive for better MPG

By far, the best recommendation to reduce your fuel consumption is to NOT drive your car. Opt to walk or bike when you can. When you have to drive, there are a few habits to be mindful of to reduce your fuel consumption. Avoiding bad driving habits like accelerating too quickly or late braking and using your cruise control more frequently can all improve MPG. To make things more interesting, keep track of your MPG with each tank fill-up and challenge yourself or compete with a friend to improve the results each time. Click below to LEARN more driving habits to reduce your fuel consumption.

Transportation

Improve the MPG on my existing car.

Not everyone has the pocket book to purchase a new electric, hybrid or 40+ MPG vehicle. But you can still do your part to improve your current vehicle's MPG. Regular maintenance and replacement of a few key items will go a long way toward that goal. Click the LEARN button below to explore what you can do to get the most out of your tank of gas:

    Industry Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

Recycling day was yesterday! My friend reused his neighbor's old fence to build a garden plot in his back yard. I thought that was such a good idea! I have tried to look for second-hand goods before purchasing something new. I love the "Buy-Nothing" groups on facebook, and I encourage others to use that as an option when trying to decide if they should throw something in the waste stream or donate it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Reduce Single-Use Disposables
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Bridey Gallagher 4/16/2021 8:09 AM
I mostly use coffee cups - it's hard because during the pandemic, I've tried to support local businesses during hard times, but for health and safety reasons, they eliminated the option to BYO cup/coffee mug. I think for now I'll continue to support the businesses, but try to remember to ask for no plastic bag/utensils if I order food for carryout!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Bridey Gallagher's avatar
    Bridey Gallagher 4/16/2021 8:06 AM
Eating more meat affects the planet because production results in significantly more ghg emissions than that of plant based products.

Not one specific experience, but I definitely feel more calm in nature and it helps me to relax.
