Transportation

Make it a Habit to Drive for better MPG

By far, the best recommendation to reduce your fuel consumption is to NOT drive your car. Opt to walk or bike when you can. When you have to drive, there are a few habits to be mindful of to reduce your fuel consumption. Avoiding bad driving habits like accelerating too quickly or late braking and using your cruise control more frequently can all improve MPG. To make things more interesting, keep track of your MPG with each tank fill-up and challenge yourself or compete with a friend to improve the results each time. Click below to LEARN more driving habits to reduce your fuel consumption.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Transportation

Improve the MPG on my existing car.

Not everyone has the pocket book to purchase a new electric, hybrid or 40+ MPG vehicle. But you can still do your part to improve your current vehicle's MPG. Regular maintenance and replacement of a few key items will go a long way toward that goal. Click the LEARN button below to explore what you can do to get the most out of your tank of gas:

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Purchase a Carbon Offset
A round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?

    Sean Fox's avatar
    Sean Fox 4/30/2021 9:04 PM
The pandemic has forced us to all think about alternative means for travel, and moving forward I plan to be more judicious about travel of all kinds. Travel in general is important, and sometimes in person meetings are critical, but even if we all are able to make a dent in the number of flights we normally would have taken each year, the results will add up.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity Calculate My Carbon Footprint
What stood out to you most about your carbon footprint? What surprised you or sparked curiosity? Where can you take most immediate action?

    Sean Fox's avatar
    Sean Fox 4/30/2021 8:58 PM
The UC Berkeley Cool Climate tool is eye-opening - I was immediately taken aback by how much airplane travel contributes to overall C footprint. Because of that, I am now looking at the purchase of C offsets, and of course when possible utilizing alternative means of travel.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Learn about Biochar
Can biochar provide additional benefits besides sequestering carbon?

    Sean Fox's avatar
    Sean Fox 4/30/2021 8:56 PM
Yes - from the research I've done as a result of the Ecochallenge it appears to be a great alternative to traditional fertilizer, and I'm looking forward to trying it in my gardens.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?

    Sean Fox's avatar
    Sean Fox 4/30/2021 8:54 PM
Education is an important component. Geothermal is not the best solution everywhere, and it can be expensive in the early stage of development. But the potential is significant and geothermal should be explored and considered as a viable clean energy technology. This is another area in which we are supporting clients and helping to find solutions in the clean energy space.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity Explore Other Electricity Solutions
What is the most exciting solution you explored? Why is it exciting to you?

    Sean Fox's avatar
    Sean Fox 4/30/2021 8:50 PM
To me the most exciting aspect of clean energy solutions is the diversity of technologies applicable in different scenarios, geographies, etc. There is no "one size fits all" solution, but instead a combination of solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, tidal, etc. - along with battery storage - could viably be deployed for effective use and eventual replacement of traditional fossil fuels.

The EcoChallenge has resulted in a powerful combination for action moving forward: witnessing the enthusiastic participation of our WSP colleagues, establishing good habits for sustainable activities, and learning more about technologies and activities that contribute to positive impacts on climate change and sustainability .

  • Sean Fox's avatar
    Sean Fox 4/29/2021 7:16 PM
One of the best parts of the EcoChallenge has been learning about interesting technologies that may not be getting a lot of attention but are increasing in scale and making significant positive impact for reducing emissions and imparting other positive environmental impacts especially in developing nations, often most susceptible to climate change
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Buildings Donate
How are environmental issues like black carbon and other emissions from cooking fires or rudimentary cookstoves also human health and social justice issues? Why do these issues matter to you?

    Sean Fox's avatar
    Sean Fox 4/29/2021 7:07 PM
These kinds of environmental issues are social justice issues and critical to solve because they results from actions that are unavoidable, as people affected do not have other technological options and must bear the brunt of these just be virtue of living/surviving. We must continue to support companies and organizations that promote technological innovations that can be utilized by developing nations.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Buildings Plan to Insulate
What are some of the benefits of making your home more energy efficient?

    Sean Fox's avatar
    Sean Fox 4/28/2021 7:53 PM
How can you argue with conserving energy and saving money? Another activity that can be done piece by piece. I started with new doors earlier this year, which have made a noticeable difference. Had an HVAC tuneup. Later this year planning to check on the insulation, and maybe move on to a few new windows.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Climate Resilience Switch your Search Engine
Will you make this your default search engine?

    Sean Fox's avatar
    Sean Fox 4/27/2021 7:37 PM
I have started to give Ecosia a try, and am interested in learning more. In addition to the environmental benefits, I am also interested in alternatives to the typical big tech monopolies.
