"My mission is to question as many things I can that I do everyday and assess whether I am doing it the best way possible or should improve my method vis a vis the importance of the environment to us as humans. For example, I used to use a lot of paper towels, but now I don't want to, so when I automatically reach for it, I stop myself and figure out what I can use instead."

Judy Ellis 4/30/2021 11:57 AMI learned that putting vegetable and fruit peelings in the garbage is not nearly as much fun as composting. I have a bowl on my counter and a bucket with a lid on my deck where I store the peelings until I am ready to take them to my family that actually gardens and composts in their yard. I have know for a long time that I should compost, but it wasn't until I did Eco-challenge this month that I actually started doing it and enjoying the feeling of doing something beneficial. Thanks EC for all your hard work and supplying the motivation I needed to get it done. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseProducing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?
Judy Ellis 4/28/2021 11:52 AMWe eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables and try to buy them organic when available. Most farms use some kind of fertilizer to grow better plants and keep the soil rich, but we don not like eating chemical fertilizer with our food. We also do not want to create more refuse than necessary. Composting joins these 2 separate issues into one important thing we can do by saving the food scraps and making it into natural fertilizer. Hurray! -
Judy Ellis 4/28/2021 11:38 AMI did start composting and felt very good about it. I have been thinking about it for quite awhile, but didn't get started until Eco-Challenge encouraged me to do it. It is easy. When I fax fruits and vegetables, I put the peels in a bowl on the kitchen counter. At the end of the day, I take the bowl and empty the contents into a lidded bucket on our deck. Once it is full, I will dump the contents into a compose pile at a neighbor's home. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and EducationIn what other ways could you help girls overcome health barriers to being able to attend school?
Judy Ellis 4/28/2021 11:31 AMGirls in school should automatically have reproductive health classes as well as access to birth control/family planning counseling. I donate annually to Planned Parenthood, NARAL, Population Connection and The Guttmacher Institute to ensure girls' needs are met by these organizations. Girls should supported and encouraged to finish school before they have children. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildingsHow do you anticipate replacing your thermostats for smart ones will positively impact your life?
Judy Ellis 4/18/2021 4:27 PMI won't have to think about the thermostat so often. I will know that it is automatically saving energy and money without remembering to go to it. -
Judy Ellis 4/18/2021 4:24 PMIt is still difficult for me to follow and accomplish all the things I am supposed to do here, but I feel good that I have accomplished some things already and will do more in the future. -
Judy Ellis 4/17/2021 10:45 AMI have been thinking about composting for quite awhile and this year I am going to do it. I will sign up with a company that has a table at our Farmers' Market. We will collect the food scraps and deliver them to the compost site nearby. Very happy to make the commitment. Thanks Eco Challenge for motivating me. Judy -
Judy Ellis 4/15/2021 6:39 PMI find this web site very challenging to do. Could you make it simpler, especially for grandparents? I even have a hard time getting in and have to change my password over and over. Don't understand why. -
Judy Ellis 4/15/2021 6:35 PMI am happy to report that I ordered 5 menstruation kits which help girls stay in school. Girls and women are very important for the future of the environment.
