Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Support Local Food Systems
Plant-Rich Diets
I will source 20 percent of my food from local producers each day. This could include signing up for a local CSA, buying from a farmer's market, visiting a food co-op, foraging with a local group, or growing my own ingredients.
Health and Education
Support Businesses Owned by Women, BIPOC, or Immigrants
Sustainable Intensification for Smallholders
I will spend 60 minutes researching businesses owned by women, immigrants, and Black, Indigenous, and people of color that I can support when shopping.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 3 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseWhile dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?
Kimberly Dempsey-Jones 4/13/2021 9:43 AMThis is a way of understanding how much food we actually need to eat. At least a 1/2 plate of yummy locally sourced veg helps with the idea of clean eating. Modelling this for our kids is also important. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Kimberly Dempsey-Jones 4/13/2021 9:39 AMI have been a vegetarian for more that 25 years. I don’t miss meat. I am raising my family in a flexitarian household. We regularly have meals featuring meat alternatives like beans and tofu. These are just part of my kiddos diet and they don’t feel like they are missing anything. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Accelerating SolutionsDependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?
Kimberly Dempsey-Jones 4/12/2021 6:19 AMI am surrounded by farms. Knowing where my food is grown, chatting with the farmers who grow it and enjoying delicious produce are all important to me. Teaching my children about the wonderful local foods, going to the farmers market and trying different recipes are important things we do as a family. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and EducationGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. What have you done in the past to support women-owned businesses? How can you better support communities by supporting women?
Kimberly Dempsey-Jones 4/12/2021 6:11 AMI am a big fan of supporting local businesses. I frequent those owned by women in the community where I live. The local bookstore, bakery, cheese, chocolate and sandwich joint are all run by women. -
Kimberly Dempsey-Jones 4/12/2021 6:09 AMGlad to participate in these actions again. We need to do consistently learn about what we are able to do to lessen our impact on the environment.
