    Buildings Upgrade My Windows
How does improving your home's (or office's) energy efficiency help you better live out your values?

    Carmen Deale's avatar
    Carmen Deale 4/30/2021 8:29 PM
As I look to improve the energy efficiency in my home, I  need less electricity and thus rely less on carbon-intensive power plants. This reduces my home's demand from the plant, which in turn benefits the environment by reducing their carbon dioxide emissions.

What are your next steps for saving energy?

    Carmen Deale's avatar
    Carmen Deale 4/30/2021 8:23 PM
I advise my brother to complete the energy saving for his house. Once the assessment was completed, he noted a couple things to change for cost and energy savings.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

    Carmen Deale's avatar
    Carmen Deale 4/30/2021 8:05 PM
What concerns me the most about how we are affecting the planet is global warning. Global warming is the long-term heating of Earth's climate system observed since the pre-industrial period due to human activities, primarily fossil fuel burning, which increases heat-trapping greenhouse gas levels in Earth's atmosphere.

Well Ladies, were near the end of the Eco Challenge. Kudos to everyone for your dedication to check in and post. Well done ladies! Let's bring home. Women of Color on three - one, two, three - Women of Color!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Find a Local Climate-Friendly Supermarket
How close is the nearest climate-friendly supermarket to your home? How could you encourage local supermarket to reduce or phase out their use of HFC refrigerants?

    Carmen Deale's avatar
    Carmen Deale 4/30/2021 7:46 PM
The top five climate-friendly supermarket are. Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe's, Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage, Amazon Green, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). The nearest supermarket is Whole Foods Market.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

    Carmen Deale's avatar
    Carmen Deale 4/30/2021 4:37 PM
Many refrigerants, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) damage the ozone layer, while others are extremely potent greenhouse gases. In fact, one kilogram of the refrigerant R410a has the same greenhouse impact as two tones of carbon dioxide, which is the equivalent of running your car for six months. Supermarkets create more than half of the plastic waste in the household stream in the UK. The Recycling Association and other experts believe supermarkets could do much more to make packaging 100% recyclable and reduce the use of plastic.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Carmen Deale's avatar
    Carmen Deale 4/30/2021 4:34 PM
The global fashion industry is generating a lot of greenhouse gases due to the energy used during its production, manufacturing, and transportation of the millions garments purchased each year. ... “ Cheap synthetic fibers also emit gases like N2O, which is 300 times more damaging than CO2.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Climate Resilience Support a Community Garden
What are the multiple benefits of community gardens, including carbon sequestration? Why do these benefits matter to you?

    Carmen Deale's avatar
    Carmen Deale 4/30/2021 2:20 PM
By growing your own garden, you are the one to decide what goes on your plants and into your soil, allowing you to reduce the amount of harmful chemicals polluting our environment and waterways. Organically growing your own food is sustainable and nourishes your soil by using safe and natural fertilizers and products.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

    Carmen Deale's avatar
    Carmen Deale 4/30/2021 2:17 PM
Spending time around trees and looking at trees reduces stress, lowers blood pressure and improves mood. Numerous studies show that both exercising in forests and simply sitting looking at trees reduce blood pressure as well as the stress-related hormones cortisol and adrenaline.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Climate Resilience Learn about 'Green Gentrification'
Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?

    Carmen Deale's avatar
    Carmen Deale 4/30/2021 2:15 PM
Many cities are already doing a lot by using renewable energy sources, cleaner production techniques and regulations or incentives to limit industrial emissions. Cutting emissions will also reduce local pollution from industries and transport, thus improving urban air quality and the health of city dwellers.
