REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Learn about the Legacy of RedliningHow does city planning and design relate to equity and climate change?
Nadia de Lange 4/29/2021 3:55 AMGreen spaces attract money and investment in upper class housing solutions. Unfortunately, these solutions cost money and push up free market house values. So generally, when an area is transformed into a green natural space, the communities who live there slowly need to leave as a result of the higher cost of living. To me this is disgraceful. City planning needs to ensure that all areas have green spaces, so that it is not a nice to have and hence doesn't disproportionately push up property prices. Green spaces of course remove CO2e from the air, so it is an important step in fighting climate change. It just needs to be done in an equitable way. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Plan to InsulateWhat are some of the benefits of making your home more energy efficient?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Upgrade My WindowsHow does improving your home's (or office's) energy efficiency help you better live out your values?
Nadia de Lange 4/29/2021 3:50 AMI hate waste. Inefficiency is waste. Unnecessary waste. There are technological advancements to counter this waste. We as humans already consume enough actual energy, without having to also be guilty of wasting it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Fix Leaky FaucetsWhat are other easy and low-cost ways to reduce your water usage at home?
Nadia de Lange 4/29/2021 3:48 AMI placed a 2 litre bottle of water in my toilet tank - cheap, good use of plastic waste, and saves water. Not watering the garden during the day or in the morning (only in the late afternoon / evening) is a free way to save water. Shorter showers, running washing machines and dishwashers on half load settings when not full (or better yet, waiting for them to be full before washing!!), using grey water for watering your garden, are all easy options. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Replace Manual ThermostatsHow do you anticipate replacing your thermostats for smart ones will positively impact your life?
Nadia de Lange 4/29/2021 3:45 AMWell...for starters they're gadgets and I love gadgets! But they will assist me in tracking my energy usage better, and having more pinpoint control over my footprint as a result. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Contact your Elected OfficialsDo you have any personal connections to a farm or farmland? If so, what are they? What feelings are evoked for you when thinking about declining farmland?
Nadia de Lange 4/29/2021 3:43 AMMy grandfather owned a farm which we visited often when I was growing up. However, it was repossessed by the government and fell into disrepair. In that specific case nature took over and thrived, so the outcome was actually positive for the environment. However, mostly pastures and crop fields do not return to their natural state. In these scenarios all I see are wasted opportunities - either to reforest or implement regenerative farming techniques to assist both the natural environment and food security. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Become A Master Recycler/ComposterWhat could you do differently to waste less?
Nadia de Lange 4/29/2021 3:36 AMThe more "finished" items I can make myself from vegetable and other non waste products, the less waste (specifically plastic waste) I will be sending to the incinerators. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Launch a Recycling ProgramHow can you take your commitment to sustainable living beyond yourself? How can you, personally, work toward broader change?
Nadia de Lange 4/29/2021 12:21 AMI try every day to create awareness around the collective actions of people and their impact on our planet. Through my role as chairperson of the Blue Goes Green committee I have advocated for various initiatives supported by Arch, both in my local office, our global offices, and now on offsets, to make a difference and create awareness. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Share Bioplastic Disposal TipsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Nadia de Lange 4/29/2021 12:18 AMOur effect on the animals inhabiting the planet is most concerning to me. From poaching, overfishing, animals dying from getting stuck in fishing lines left behind by fishermen, factory farming of livestock, the effect of deforestation on animal habitats...I can probably go on forever. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Host a Film ScreeningThank you for raising awareness of women's and gender equality issues. What is the next step to actually address this disparity?
Nadia de Lange 4/29/2021 12:08 AMWorking within your sphere or influence to address unconscious biases. For me that entails speaking up on biases against female leadership in the corporate world.
