REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityHad you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!
Zada Congleton 4/27/2021 8:22 PMhad not heard of biomass technology, it surprised and intrigued me to learn about this cool resource. I didn't know that cow poop could lead to energy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Zada Congleton 4/26/2021 2:02 PMThe Easiest way for someone to protect peatlands is to raise money for research and protection. Supporting this research would help further our knowledge of peatlands also potentially stop fires and further damage. Raising support for these very valuable Eco communities would lessen damage to the Atmosphere. Also to protecting these valuable resources that can mitigate flooding, inhabits rare species, also purifies water. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Zada Congleton 4/21/2021 8:02 PMI was surprised by the fact that this system is not only approved by the government but supported and encouraged by them. I have heard a lot that to sustain this type of lifestyle we need four to six planets and it’s obvious this is backed up by data, so why aren’t we making the change? I am concerned about the future -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
Zada Congleton 4/21/2021 5:50 PMTrees are hard to restore, so I think we need trees as a resource. Seems like sometimes we are wasteful, and if we cut out waste we would be much better off. I plan on being less wasteful by using less plastic and planting more trees when I can. I feel overwhelmed by the amount we need to supply our demand is insurmountable. Thought I am hopeful about the fact that there are websites and organizations that care about the planet and are making a big difference.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksHow is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Zada Congleton 4/20/2021 9:02 AMTo decrease my impact, I could cut palm oil, coffee, and meat for a start. These three things contribute to deforestation and will increase if unchecked. These three things decrease forests by creating a need for agricultural land. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Zada Congleton 4/16/2021 1:36 PMNow from what I know of use by and sell by dates, I will be less worried about using food whose date has passed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate ResilienceHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Zada Congleton 4/16/2021 1:35 PMI had not heard about silvopasture before, and after taking a look at it, it is a beautifully natural way to get meat and milk rather than the way we currently raise cattle on lands with no trees. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and EducationWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
Zada Congleton 4/13/2021 8:37 AMTraditionally, men have worked outside the home, and women have been responsible for caregiving for children. Those gender roles are slowly being challenged, and women are catching up. For example, we have an all-female City Council for the first time in Asheville’s history. But the pandemic has pushed this development of equality back a bit, as families have struggled to find child care and women have picked up the slack. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and EducationWhat did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?
Zada Congleton 4/01/2021 10:37 AMI learned that there is less fertility when healthcare, education, and access to contraception rises. People who live in poverty have less access to family planning and thus have more children, which keeps them in poverty.
