  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Learn about Biochar
Can biochar provide additional benefits besides sequestering carbon?

    Ricky Brown's avatar
    Ricky Brown 4/22/2021 11:10 AM
Biochar was a very interesting topic for me to read about. I remember hearing something about it as a kid in middle school but I did not know the full extent of its benefits. Along with sequestering carbon, biochar is also an excellent fertilizer as it returns nutrients into the earths soil. This is an intriguing technique which shows some promise in providing hope for our planet's future.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn about Temperate Forests
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

    Ricky Brown's avatar
    Ricky Brown 4/21/2021 9:35 AM
The overwhelming portions of our current environmental situation for me are the pollution in our oceans (mainly plastics), deforestation, and air pollution. What makes me feel hopeful is that we are constantly evolving and developing new technologies to help combat these issues. Another aspect that makes me feel hopeless, however, is the fact that until legislation gets involved to stop major pollution events (worldwide) like dumping trash directly into the ocean or continuously clearing out forrests, one person planting a tree in their yard really doesnt put a dent in the damage that is continuously being done. Our efforts need to be on a much larger scale if they are going to be impactful. Yes each person can do their part, but its up to our leaders around the world to end the massive scale, commercial pollution through legislation.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Buildings Install A Toilet Tank Bank
How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

    Ricky Brown's avatar
    Ricky Brown 4/21/2021 7:48 AM
One could start by installing an energy efficient toilet like I did. This will help conserve the water resources we have now before our water situation takes a drastic turn. Unfortunately in our cold climate we will need to have reserves stocked up to last throughout the winter, but rainwater can be collected and used to water flowers and plants saving on the less energy efficient options from our taps.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Buildings Upgrade My Windows
How does improving your home's (or office's) energy efficiency help you better live out your values?

    Ricky Brown's avatar
    Ricky Brown 4/21/2021 7:34 AM
By increasing my home's energy efficiency, I am saving precious energy resources, reducing my carbon footprint, and saving money. It is a no brainer!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

    Ricky Brown's avatar
    Ricky Brown 4/20/2021 12:52 PM
I learned that refrigerants are extremely bad for our environment and they are quite difficult to recycle. The Ozone layer is negatively affected by the refrigerants we commonly use. Massive supermarkets use tons of refrigerants to keep their products cool. While it is nice as a consumer it is not so nice on our carbon footprint.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Properly Dispose of Refrigerants
How do you address your own feelings of concern, fear or despair about climate change?

    Ricky Brown's avatar
    Ricky Brown 4/20/2021 12:49 PM
When thinking about climate change, I used to think that the world was doomed. Now, looking at all of the different solutions we have come up with to help preserve our precious planet, I do not feel negatively at all. I am optimistic for our future but it will take a conscious effort from us all!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Ricky Brown's avatar
    Ricky Brown 4/20/2021 12:46 PM
The simple answer here is to express yourself in other ways. However, if one still wanted to express themselves through their fashion while living green, they could use their old clothes and repurpose them instead of having to go to the department store to purchase more.
