Alternative Cement
I will spend at least 10 minutes researching cement alternatives that reduce the carbon footprint of concrete.
Industry
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
Multiple Industry Solutions
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.

Refrigerant Management
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning how to properly dispose of my refrigerator, freezer, and other refrigerants at the end of their useful lives.
Industry
Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
Refrigerant Management
I will spend 15 minute(s) learning about the climate impact of refrigerants and what climate-friendly refrigerants are by using the links below.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Electricity
Explore Other Electricity Solutions
All Electricity Solutions
I will spend at least 15 minutes researching other Drawdown Electricity Solutions.
Electricity
Spread the Word about Energy Alternatives
All Electricity Solutions
I will research and tell 1 people each day about the benefits of alternative energy sources like wind turbines, solar energy, geothermal energy, and methane digesters.
Electricity
Calculate My Carbon Footprint
All Drawdown Solutions
I will calculate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce my negative impact on the environment.
Industry
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bioplastics
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and BIPOC-majority neighborhoods. I will avoid buying and using 3 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.
Action Track: Climate Resilience
Bird Habitat
Create a favorable habitat for birds via feeders, trees, and bird friendly perches.
Electricity
Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
Methane Digesters
I will watch a video about methane digesters (also commonly known as anaerobic digesters).
Electricity
Choose LED Bulbs
LED Lighting
I will replace 8 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Buildings
Research Heat Pumps
High-Efficiency Heat Pumps
I will spend at least 20 minutes researching heat pumps to see if installing one makes sense for my home/building.
Buildings
Plan to Insulate
Insulation
I will find out how to make my home more energy efficient through better insulation and weatherization.
Transportation
Conduct Virtual Meetings
Telepresence
I will encourage my office to hold meetings virtually whenever possible instead of requiring travel.
Transportation
Try Carpooling
Carpooling
I will commute by carpool 20 mile(s) per day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Industry
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Industry
Choose Recycled Paper
Recycled Paper
I will plan ahead to only use paper products made from post-consumer recycled paper for my home or office.
Industry
Go Paperless
Recycled Paper
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Learn about BiocharCan biochar provide additional benefits besides sequestering carbon?
Ricky Brown 4/22/2021 11:10 AMBiochar was a very interesting topic for me to read about. I remember hearing something about it as a kid in middle school but I did not know the full extent of its benefits. Along with sequestering carbon, biochar is also an excellent fertilizer as it returns nutrients into the earths soil. This is an intriguing technique which shows some promise in providing hope for our planet's future. -
Ricky Brown 4/22/2021 6:56 AMThursday... RACE DAY. Lets get that Pizza!! What earth friendly races can you think of to try with your friends? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn about Temperate ForestsAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
Ricky Brown 4/21/2021 9:35 AMThe overwhelming portions of our current environmental situation for me are the pollution in our oceans (mainly plastics), deforestation, and air pollution. What makes me feel hopeful is that we are constantly evolving and developing new technologies to help combat these issues. Another aspect that makes me feel hopeless, however, is the fact that until legislation gets involved to stop major pollution events (worldwide) like dumping trash directly into the ocean or continuously clearing out forrests, one person planting a tree in their yard really doesnt put a dent in the damage that is continuously being done. Our efforts need to be on a much larger scale if they are going to be impactful. Yes each person can do their part, but its up to our leaders around the world to end the massive scale, commercial pollution through legislation. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Install A Toilet Tank BankHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Ricky Brown 4/21/2021 7:48 AMOne could start by installing an energy efficient toilet like I did. This will help conserve the water resources we have now before our water situation takes a drastic turn. Unfortunately in our cold climate we will need to have reserves stocked up to last throughout the winter, but rainwater can be collected and used to water flowers and plants saving on the less energy efficient options from our taps. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Upgrade My WindowsHow does improving your home's (or office's) energy efficiency help you better live out your values?
Ricky Brown 4/21/2021 7:34 AMBy increasing my home's energy efficiency, I am saving precious energy resources, reducing my carbon footprint, and saving money. It is a no brainer! -
Ricky Brown 4/21/2021 6:44 AMIts Wednesday, another great day to make mindful choices to preserve our planet! Let's get that Za y'all! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Research the Climate Impact of RefrigerantsWhat did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?
Ricky Brown 4/20/2021 12:52 PMI learned that refrigerants are extremely bad for our environment and they are quite difficult to recycle. The Ozone layer is negatively affected by the refrigerants we commonly use. Massive supermarkets use tons of refrigerants to keep their products cool. While it is nice as a consumer it is not so nice on our carbon footprint. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Properly Dispose of RefrigerantsHow do you address your own feelings of concern, fear or despair about climate change?
Ricky Brown 4/20/2021 12:49 PMWhen thinking about climate change, I used to think that the world was doomed. Now, looking at all of the different solutions we have come up with to help preserve our precious planet, I do not feel negatively at all. I am optimistic for our future but it will take a conscious effort from us all! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Learn About & Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Ricky Brown 4/20/2021 12:46 PMThe simple answer here is to express yourself in other ways. However, if one still wanted to express themselves through their fashion while living green, they could use their old clothes and repurpose them instead of having to go to the department store to purchase more.
