Make it a Habit to Drive for better MPG

By far, the best recommendation to reduce your fuel consumption is to NOT drive your car. Opt to walk or bike when you can. When you have to drive, there are a few habits to be mindful of to reduce your fuel consumption. Avoiding bad driving habits like accelerating too quickly or late braking and using your cruise control more frequently can all improve MPG. To make things more interesting, keep track of your MPG with each tank fill-up and challenge yourself or compete with a friend to improve the results each time. Click below to LEARN more driving habits to reduce your fuel consumption.

Transportation Research and Advocate for High-Speed Rail
What are the factors that influence your choice of transportation? These can include things like money, time, and convenience, as well as perceptions of danger or safety. What would need to change for you to regularly choose more climate-friendly options?

    Yasmine Badawi 4/30/2021 8:41 AM
Money, time and convenience are certainly options that influence my choice of transportation.  Unfortunately, our suburbs are very distant from our cities and in many cases public rail or bus is not readily available.  Public transportation that is both cost and time efficient is needed to allow me to change to more climate-friendly options.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Yasmine Badawi's avatar
    Yasmine Badawi 4/30/2021 8:36 AM
The availability, abundance and cost of meat is a key driver as to why people in richer countries consume meat more, further eating meat for many people allows them to feel that they are in a different social class if meat is offered on the menu everyday more than once a day.

Consuming meat has a lot of adverse effects on the body, in many countries where meat is more expensive those who can afford it tend to consume more of it and thus they tend to have many health issues.

How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Yasmine Badawi 4/30/2021 8:28 AM
it allows me to understand the difference between those dates and make smarter decisions about the purchase to ensure that the item purchased will be utilized and not go to waste.

Producing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?

    Yasmine Badawi's avatar
    Yasmine Badawi 4/30/2021 8:22 AM
water and energy and financial capital is what motivates me the most to change my behavior regarding food waste.  recognizing the impact this could have on my children's generation and how the actions we do today could affect them in the future drives me everyday to ensure that I am doing my part and setting an example for them on how to protect and conserve our resources and reducing the amount of waste we generate.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity Rooftop Solar Consultation
Identify some ways in which modern human societies have become unsustainable. What kind of roles do individuals have in creating and changing practices in society?

    Yasmine Badawi's avatar
    Yasmine Badawi 4/30/2021 8:18 AM
Due to the fact that water and electricity are readily available in our homes, we have become increasingly careless in our usage whether by leaving the tv on overnight or running the water continuously in showers and sinks. Our roles start with the individual and the example they set for those within their family unit and trying to expand that to community etc.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
