Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 1 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Electricity
Advocate for Solar Installation
Distributed Solar Photovoltaics
I will create a plan to and advocate for solar installation at my business, apartment building, or campus.
Electricity
Spread the Word about Energy Alternatives
All Electricity Solutions
I will research and tell 1 people each day about the benefits of alternative energy sources like wind turbines, solar energy, geothermal energy, and methane digesters.
Industry
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bioplastics
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and BIPOC-majority neighborhoods. I will avoid buying and using 1 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Zero-waste Cooking
Reduced Food Waste
I will cook 1 meal(s) with zero-waste each day
Land Sinks
Forest-Friendly Foods 1
Tropical Forest Restoration
I will spend at least 45 minutes researching the impact of my diet to see how it contributes to deforestation.
Electricity
Learn More about Biomass
Biomass Power
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of biomass.
Land Sinks
Learn about Temperate Forests
Temperate Forest Restoration
I will spend at least 25 minutes learning more about the environmental services provided by and the environmental issues affecting temperate forests.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Industry
Launch a Recycling Program
Recycling
I will set up a recycling center at my workplace or school.
Transportation
Advocate For Greener Vehicles
Electric Cars, Hybrid Cars, Efficient Trucks
I will assess the vehicles used by my company or college and advocate for a purchasing policy focused on electric and fuel-efficient vehicles
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 1 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Keep Track of Wasted Food
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Earth Month Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.
Industry
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Buildings
Plan to Insulate
Insulation
I will find out how to make my home more energy efficient through better insulation and weatherization.
Action Track: Climate Resilience
Support a Community Garden
Multiple Solutions
I will support a community garden by volunteering, donating, or advocating for a new or existing one.
Action Track: Climate Resilience
Plant Trees
Temperate Forest Restoration
I will plant 1 tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 10 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Land Sinks
Reuse scrapwood
I will build something out of scrapwood instead of buying lumber.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Tend A Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Composting
Composting, Reduced Food Waste
I will start a compost bin where I live.
Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop
Public Transit
I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or implementing some other small improvement.
Electricity
Choose LED Bulbs
LED Lighting
I will replace 2 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

John Hansen 4/30/2021 1:06 AMwell this was interesting.
I'm still hoping I can do more eventually.
Need to really start pressuring Bruce Page to get his license. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
John Hansen 4/29/2021 8:37 AMI already don't eat most of these things very often but I'm not getting rid of chocolate. Sorry, but no. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Advocate For Greener VehiclesHow does advocating for green vehicles in your community connect to your values? How might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the shift to fuel-efficient vehicles?
John Hansen 4/27/2021 1:18 PMLooking at the past 20 years, concern about the climate is growing quickly. Whatever is going on here is definitely working. We should be fine as long as some politician doesn't ruin it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Keep Track of Wasted FoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. How would you rather use this money?
-
John Hansen 4/26/2021 11:52 PMThree old boards I found in my basement before and after I put them through a plainer. A little extra effort can save a tree. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Zero-waste CookingIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?
John Hansen 4/26/2021 11:44 PMI don't eat many fruits of vegetables, and even then I don't buy the crop itself, but I try to not throw away as much food as possible when cooking or eating. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use CompostingProducing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?
John Hansen 4/26/2021 11:40 PMIt's a much better idea to use organic material that would otherwise be thrown away to fertilize plants instead of using toxic chemicals that kill everything else.
This is already done with poop, but it can sometimes be difficult to dispose of food in this way, especially for the average consumer. A box to throw this stuff away would definitely help with that, and maybe we can even have a garbage man specifically for collecting compost. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Plan to InsulateWhat are some of the benefits of making your home more energy efficient?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Spread the Word about Energy AlternativesWhat inspiration and wisdom can you gather from your family, faith, or community traditions that would help you in both communicating about and addressing our most pressing energy issues?
John Hansen 4/26/2021 11:33 PMMost people like the idea of electric vehicles and solar power. There are still some people afraid of nuclear for some reason but we're going in the right direction.
Faith may not help but she will definitely support this. -
John Hansen 4/26/2021 11:19 PMHopefully today I can talk to Mr. Dan about my vegetable oil idea. If accepted, I may go around town collecting used vegetable oil on Wednesday, filter it, and bring it to school on Thursday and let the bus drivers refuel their buses with the oil.
